The city of Memphis and the Downtown Memphis Commission suffered a stinging setback this week in their quest to rid a key section of Main Street of a deteriorating eyesore, one that has survived multiple attempts to be sold and defied repeated orders to clean up.

2. Commission Receives Schools Financials -

Shelby County Commissioners formally get the financials of Shelby County’s two public school systems Monday, May 6, in an action that is not expected to generate much debate.

But the financial statements for the fiscal year that ended June 30 is another step along the path toward the formal merger of both school systems effective at the end of the current fiscal year.

NASHVILLE (AP) – A proposal to eliminate hotel allowances for some Tennessee lawmakers passed the House on Monday despite concerns that it might hurt those who use the excess to defray other unreimbursed expenses.

4. South Main’s New Life -

The history of the South Main Historic Arts District is as colorful as its present-day users, an alternating rhythm of sorts in Memphis’ songbook.

The area has oscillated from its ritzy suburban roots of the 1800s to the industrial era ghost town of the 20th century and now to its current status as Downtown’s flourishing arts and boutique district and the subject of some $100 million in investment. And it’s all due to stakeholders who braved the status quo in distinguishing the southern end of the Central Business District as that funky place with an indescribable vibe.

7. Raleigh Office Complex Sold To Local Entity -

An office complex in Raleigh has traded hands after being under the same family ownership for more than 30 years.

Commercial Real Estate Network LLC, a local investor, has purchased the 40,756-square-foot Raleigh Center Office Complex at 2974 Austin Peay Highway from Charles R. Averwater Living Trust for $299,000.

8. Grand Masters Arrive at Dixon -

For the New Year, the Dixon Gallery and Gardens chose an exhibition so grand it wouldn’t all fit through the doors.

No problem, said Dixon director Kevin Sharp. Museum officials just expanded the doors.

11. Square Deal Undone -

A facelift has been in the works for about a year for a Midtown landmark that long ago succumbed to the real estate equivalent of jowls and wrinkled skin. But after months of planning, it now appears the proposed nips and tucks for Overton Square, a roughly 10-acre hodgepodge of shops, restaurants and a movie theater, won't be happening after all.

The Center City Development Corp. is scheduled to consider two loan applications from a pair of Downtown businesses at the board’s meeting this morning.

15. Events - The Memphis Rotary Club -

The Memphis Rotary Club will meet today at noon in Ballroom A of the Memphis Cook Convention Center, 255 N. Main St. The featured speaker will be R.C. The Engineers’ Club of Memphis Inc. will hold its weekly lunch meeting today at noon at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. Ray Wofford, the special projects executive for ACO Polymer Products, will speak on “The ABC’s of Trench Drainage.” The cost is $12 and no reservations are required.

17. South Main Association To Discuss Retail Patterns -

Downtown retail patterns and areas for expanded opportunity in that sector of the market will be the topic of discussion at next week’s South Main Association member meeting. The group will meet June 10 at the Downtown Condo Connection in the 420 South Front Condos at 420 S. Front St., Suite 107.
