1. Police, Fire Directors Discuss Budget With Council -

Memphis City Council members got deeper Tuesday, Feb. 4, into the specifics of Memphis Police and Fire Department budget decisions.

But they didn’t get a clearer picture of what the direction forward will be as they and Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. prepare to make some hard decisions about public safety in dealing with the city’s unfunded pension liability.

That’s how many people are currently connected to the ‘Net, according to cybersecurity authority Melissa Hathaway, who was in town Thursday to share with the Economic Club of Memphis her warnings about how fragile the world’s digital infrastructure is.

4. Early Voting Count Suggests High Election Day Turnout -

Early voting in advance of the Oct. 6 Election Day in Memphis cracked 30,000 of the city’s 426,583 voters.

Because early voting in Memphis elections usually doesn’t account for even half of the overall voter turnout, the early voter turnout suggests the total voter turnout may be in double-digit percentages. That is low, but not as low as some politicos had predicted for the ballot topped by a mayor’s race and contests for all 13 seats on the Memphis City Council.

5. What Happened to the Rainmakers? -

One reason businesses are stagnant is the decline in “rainmakers.”

This generation of “no, we don’t answer the phone” businesspeople, especially revenue generators, have turned to clicks, tweets , likes, texts, hits, mail, posts and other phone-it-in metrics to define success as well as attain it.
