1. UTHSC Honors Four With Alumnus Awards

Four physicians will receive the 2014 Outstanding Alumnus Awards from the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center on Aug. 14.
The doctors are being honored for their work in clinical practice, teaching and community service. Two internal medicine specialists, a pediatric allergist/immunologist and a pediatrician, the outstanding physicians will be honored when graduates of the UTHSC College of Medicine gather in Memphis for the annual College of Medicine Alumni Weekend Aug. 14-16.
2. McKinney Named Branch Manager at Waddell & Reed

Mack McKinney has been promoted at Waddell & Reed to district branch manager for the Memphis area. McKinney has been with the financial advisory firm for five years, holding management positions for four of those years.
McKinney works to develop field leaders and help financial advisers leverage their strengths and experiences to build successful practices. He serves as mentor to both new and seasoned financial advisers and says he’s committed to building an office that demonstrates the collective passion shared for clients and the community.

Executing a plan to visit 25 polling places, I got caught in traffic, went down a road I’d no intention of traveling, and wound up at a polling place I’d not intended of visiting. It was 5:30 p.m., and the volunteers at this place expected only a dozen or so voters in the next two hours.)

Melanie A. Keller has been named president of Meritan Inc. Keller, who joined the nonprofit social services agency in 2006, previously served as its executive vice president. In her new role, she is responsible for oversight of more than 500 employees and contractors as well as the agency’s $21 million annual budget. Keller also manages its quality improvement and strategic planning efforts.

The commission made the decision Wednesday without deciding specifics other than the term limits would not apply to the city court clerk's office or the three city court judge positions. The specifics are to be fleshed out as the commission looks at term limit provisions in other cities.

Lots of adjectives are being used these days to describe events that occurred during one of the most dramatic years in recent memory for City of Memphis finances.
On several occasions, city officials have admitted their revenue projections for 2005 were inflated and spending was excessive, even while operating costs soared. They've blamed the national economy for being sluggish. All of that - plus insufficient planning, they admit - contributed to a deficit that nearly wiped out the city's operating fund, its major source of spending money.
