1. Housing Market Stumbles in First Quarter -

Shelby County home sales slowed in the first quarter when compared to the same three-month period in 2013.

Shelby County recorded 3,270 home sales in the quarter that ended March 31, down 3 percent from the 3,383 homes sold in the first quarter of 2013, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

2. Blume Named to Tennessee Real Estate Commission -

Gary Blume, a veteran agent with RE/MAX Real Estate Experts, has been appointed by Gov. Bill Haslam to a five-year term on the Tennessee Real Estate Commission. Blume is a past president of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors and has served twice as president of the Tennessee Real Estate Educational Foundation.

3. Kiser Joins Volunteer Mid-South As Community Services Director -

Amanda Kiser has joined Volunteer Mid-South as community services director. Kiser’s responsibilities include mobilizing and maximizing volunteer resources, coordinating training for partner agencies, creating and leading community projects, and marketing VMS’ benefits to agencies and the public.

4. Fayette, Tipton Housing Markets Still Slipping -

January home sales declined in Fayette and Tipton counties – 3.2 and 40 percent, respectively, from the same month a year ago – and Shelby County’s neighbors to the east and north remain buyers’ markets as home prices remain stagnant.

5. Head Selected as Director Of SWTCC Library -

Carolyn Head has been selected to serve as executive director of Library Services for Southwest Tennessee Community College.

6. Harmon Receives Pro Bono Award -

Whitney Harmon, an attorney at Glankler Brown PLLC, has received the first Frank J. Glankler Jr. Pro Bono Award.

Glankler Brown committed this year to taking a minimum of 35 pro bono cases each year from Memphis Area Legal Services, an organization that provides legal assistance for people unable to afford representation. Harmon practices in the area of civil litigation and is a member of the American, Tennessee, Kentucky and Memphis Bar Associations, as well as the Association for Women Attorneys.

7. Fencing Match -

In what has become a continuing uphill battle against national headlines routinely depicting doom and gloom in the housing market, Memphis real estate professionals have launched a counterattack.

"Hop Off the Fence" is a calculated campaign of the Memphis Area Association of Realtors (MAAR) that began Monday and will run through October.

8. Med Nurse Earns State Leadership Award -

The Tennessee Nurses Association recognized Dr. Diane Todd Pace with the Alma E. Gault Leadership Award. Pace is a nurse practitioner/nurse scientist with the Regional Medical Center at Memphis/Health Loop Clinics. She earned a doctorate from the University of Tennessee.

9. Area Home Sales See Midsummer Decline -

After a solid three-year run, it finally happened. The number of home sales declined in July compared to July 2004, marking the first time since July 2002 that sales have seen a year-over-year decline.
