The law firm of Bass, Berry & Sims PLC has won the mergers and acquisitions “deal of the year” award in the $50 million to $100 million category from M&A Advisors.
The deal for which Bass Berry won the award was announced earlier this year. It involved Luminex Corp. – a health care and life sciences research company – acquiring privately held GenturaDx, a molecular diagnostics company focused on making nucleic acid testing affordable and practical for any lab.

UPS may not be based in Memphis – its hometown is Atlanta – but fourth quarter earnings from the world’s largest shipper should create as much buzz here as anywhere.
The company reported a fourth-quarter profit of $757 million, three times its profit from a year ago. It was the equivalent of 75 cents per share, compared to a profit of $254 million, or 25 cents per share, a year earlier. Revenue fell 2.5 percent to $12.38 billion from $12.70 billion.

Al Bell has been elected the new chairman of the Memphis Music Foundation.
Under Bell’s direction, the foundation will continue to provide education, strategic planning and promotional opportunities to the Memphis music industry.
Bell is the former chairman and owner of Stax Records and former president of Motown Records. Bell has worked with artists such as Booker T and the MG’s, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes and Richard Pryor.
