New Memphis Institute will host “Whatever It Takes: Creating World Class Public Education” on Wednesday, Sept. 11, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis, 3700 Central Ave. The discussion will feature Shelby County Schools superintendent Dorsey Hopson and Achievement School District superintendent Chris Barbic, and will be moderated by University of Memphis interim president Brad Martin. 7. ‘Voice’ Star to Headline Calvary Rescue Mission Fundraiser -

On Thursday, Sept. 12, Calvary Rescue Mission will hold its annual Appreciation Dinner to celebrate 46 years of helping the homeless in Memphis.

The dinner will be held at Bellevue Baptist Church, 2000 Appling Road, and featured entertainment for the evening will be Visible Music College graduate and “The Voice” star Sarah Simmons.

9. Christian Brothers Names Doyle Vice President of Student Life -

Tim Doyle has joined Christian Brothers University as associate vice president of student life. In the role, Doyle supervises multiple aspects of campus operations – including housing, student government, health services and Greek organizations – working to address non-academic student needs and help students develop into active, engaged alumni.

10. American Freight Furniture to Open Near Wolfchase -

American Freight Furniture and Mattress will open its first Memphis store Nov. 28 at 7859 U.S. 64. The 48,000-square-foot building is one mile west of Wolfchase Galleria and once housed Richwell Furniture Gallery.
