1. US Economy Hobbled by Weak Hiring, Manufacturing -

WASHINGTON (AP) – A trio of reports Thursday offered a reminder that the U.S. economy is struggling to grow and add jobs.

The number of people seeking unemployment benefits last week stayed near a level that signals only weak hiring in September. Manufacturing shrank for a fifth straight month in the Philadelphia region, a sign that weaker global growth has hurt demand for American-made goods. And a measure of future economy activity declined for the second time in three months.

WASHINGTON (AP) – In in the latest sign that the U.S. economy is surging at year's end, unemployment claims have dropped to the lowest level since April 2008, long before anyone realized that the nation was in a recession.

3. US Home Sales Jump 7.7 Pct as Foreclosures Rise -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The number of Americans who bought previously occupied homes rose in August. But the sales were driven by an increase in foreclosures, a sign that home prices could fall further next year and slow a housing recovery.

4. Leading Economic Indicators Rise in August -

NEW YORK (AP) – A private forecast of economic activity rose in August for the fifth straight month, the latest sign the recession has ended. The New York-based Conference Board’s leading indicators point to an economy on solid ground early next year, though some analysts caution that a rising unemployment rate will restrain growth.
