1. Basar Looks to 2014 County Commission Election -

It may be the first time that a Shelby County Commissioner has given public notice of a barbecue.

Commissioner Steve Basar has held four at his house in the year that he’s been on the elected body. And he told political supporters at a fundraiser last week that he has “sunshined” all of them, a shorthand term to describe the public notice required by Tennessee’s open meetings law – or Sunshine Law – for any deliberative gathering of two or more commissioners.

Dr. David Stern, executive dean of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine, has launched a unique effort to address community health needs in Memphis.

The biggest contribution we can make is to move the needle on overall community health and to develop new methods that we can apply to other communities like Memphis.”

5. Madewell Coming to Saddle Creek -

The Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown will soon gain another national retailer with no other presence in Tennessee.

Madewell, a subsidiary of J. Crew Group Inc., has signed a 3,061-square-foot lease in The Shops of Saddle Creek North, 7509 Poplar Ave., in part of the space that was previously The Gap in between James Avery Jewelry and Brighton Collectables.

17. Hubbard Named MAAR Realtor of the Year -

Regina Hubbard, a broker with Lester Hubbard Realtors, was named 2009 Realtor of the Year at the Memphis Area Association of Realtors’ honors luncheon, held Wednesday at the Holiday Inn-University of Memphis.

18. MAAR Commercial Council Names 2010 Officers -

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council announced Friday that Wyatt Aiken of Commercial Advisors will serve as 2010 president and Ron Riley of In-Rel Management will serve as 2010 president-elect.

In the year he’s been head of the Memphis school system, Superintendent Kriner Cash has been virtually unflappable.

Since the Memphis school board hired him in July 2008, Cash has doggedly pitched a detailed plan for the school system’s renewal with dozens of specific goals in a well-traveled PowerPoint presentation.

Another round in the battle against scrap-metal theft is set for today, when the Memphis City Court hears protests from companies that haven’t complied with an ordinance requiring them to obtain a permit to recycle scrap metals such as copper and also to “tag and hold” purchased metals before processing them.

Dr. Chrysanthe Preza has received a more than $740,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award for her research to improve live cell imaging. Preza is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering.

By now Shelby County Board of Commissioners Chairwoman Deidre Malone had hoped to be holding public hearings on two options for changing the way the Memphis and Shelby County public school systems are funded.

The Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council has elected Irvin Skopp of Belz Realty Co. as the 2009 board of directors’ president and Wyatt Aiken of Commercial Advisors as 2009 president-elect.
