1. Phillips Joins Spirco as Manager, Vice President -

Mike Phillips has joined Spirco Manufacturing as general manager and vice president of operations. In his new role, Phillips will oversee all divisions of the metal-building manufacturer and direct its organizational needs.

2. Black Mississippi Officials Want Districting Lawsuit Dismissed -

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The four black elected supervisors in Mississippi's most populated county asked a federal judge on Monday to dismiss a lawsuit accusing them of improperly using race as a consideration in redrawing voting districts.

5. Diversified Trust Promotes Smithwick -

Diversified Trust, a Memphis-based comprehensive wealth management firm, has a new managing principal of its Memphis office.

Robert “Robin” Smithwick III assumed the role effective Jan. 1. He’s taking the role previously held by Samuel Graham, who became the firm’s CEO in 2011.

6. Sotomayor Wins GOP Backers After Smooth Hearings -

WASHINGTON (AP) -U.S. Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor won her first public pledges of support from Senate Republicans and one prominent GOP opponent, after a smooth performance at her confirmation hearings that has placed her firmly on track to become the high court's first Latina and the first Democratic-named justice in 15 years.

7. Fogerty Joins Jackson Lewis In Of Counsel Role -

Whitney King Fogerty has joined Jackson Lewis LLP as of counsel.

Fogerty was previously a shareholder at Ogletree, Deakins, Nash, Smoak & Stewart PC, where she specialized in labor and employment litigation. She has practiced law for 10 years and has been named among Chambers USA’s Leading Lawyers for Business the past two years.

8. Defendant in Reinsurance Fraud Faces Sentencing -

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A former executive of Connecticut-based General Re Corp. will serve a year and a day in prison for his role in an accounting scandal that authorities say cost shareholders of American International Group Inc. more than $500 million.

9. Obama Urges Spending Curbs, Hands Out $15 Billion -

WASHINGTON (AP) - Urging future restraint even as current spending soars, President Barack Obama pledged on Monday to dramatically slash the skyrocketing annual budget deficit as he started to dole out the record $787 billion economic stimulus package he signed last week.

Linda Martin has joined UT Medical Group Inc. as vice president of corporate compliance.

11. RISE Foundation Names Board Members -

The RISE Foundation has named its 2008-2009 board of directors.

The members are Jay Healy, board chair; Beverly Robertson, vice chair; Marianne Parrs, treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee; Chuck Schadt, secretary; Tomeka Hart, community initiatives chair; Scott Cromie, new markets chair; and David Waddell, board development chair.

12. Frey Named Alpha Eta Society National President -

Dr. William R. Frey recently was selected as the national president of the Alpha Eta Society, the largest scholastic honor for allied health professionals. The organization has more than 60 chapters throughout the U.S.

13. Perrin to Oversee Orpheum's Fundraising Efforts, Special Events -

The Orpheum Theatre announced Jim Perrin has been named vice president of development. Perrin previously served as the president of Junior Achievement of Memphis & the Mid-South Inc. In his new position, he will oversee the Orpheum's fundraising efforts, special events and other projects.

14. MATCU Banks on Judy Conrad as VP of Lending -

Judy Conrad has been named vice president of lending at Memphis Area Teachers' Credit Union (MATCU). Conrad previously served as vice president and manager of BankTennessee in Ripley. She has worked in the financial industry for almost 40 years.
