NEW YORK (AP) – There's no business like small business.

Mix the high stakes of running a small business with a dash of family drama and throw in a camera crew and you get hit reality television shows such as "Pawn Stars," ''Welcome to Sweetie Pie's" and "Duck Dynasty."

2. Obama Carries Shelby, Cohen Over Flinn and Two Tax Hikes Defeated -

President Barack Obama carried Shelby County in unofficial Nov. 6 election returns as his Republican challenger Mitt Romney took the state’s 11 electoral votes.

Voter turnout in the most popular election cycle among Shelby County voters was 61.9 percent, about the same percentage as four years ago. But the 371,256 voters is fewer than 2008 when more than 400,000 Shelby County voters cast ballots. The percentage is about the same because there are fewer registered voters in Shelby County than there were four years ago after a purge by election officials.

3. Suburban School Board Races Almost Set -

Races on the Nov. 6 ballot for six sets of suburban school boards took shape Thursday, Aug. 16, at the noon filing deadline for candidate qualifying petitions.

The candidates that made the deadline have another week to withdraw from the races if they wish.

4. Juvenile Poverty's Bite is Deep in Tennessee -

NASHVILLE (AP) – U.S. Census figures bear out the anecdotal evidence of more children in poverty that Tennessee schools have been seeing.

The percentage of children from economically impoverished families rose 1.8 percent in Tennessee from 2009 to 2010 – two-tenths of a percentage point more than the national average increase.

5. FBI Special Agent Harrison Named PRSA Communicator of the Year -

My Harrison has been named the 2006 PRSA Communicator of the Year by the Memphis chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She is a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in charge of the Memphis field office. Since her arrival in Memphis two years ago, she has supervised a number of high-profile federal investigations, including "Operation Tennessee Waltz," "Operation Tarnished Blue" and "Operation Main Street Sweeper."

6. St. Jude Researcher Earns National Recognition -

Scientific American named Dr. Robert G. Webster, the Rose Marie Thomas chair at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, as a research leader in the 2005 Scientific American 50 - a list compiled by the magazine that recognizes outstanding acts of leadership in science and technology from the past year.
