1. EdR’s Net Income Rises in Third Quarter -

EdR reported a net income of $489,000 in the third quarter, the Memphis-based collegiate housing real estate investment trust reported after market close Thursday, Oct. 25.

That compared to a $6.5 million loss during 2011’s third quarter. EdR attributed its year-over-year net increase to improvements in same-community net operating income, operating profits of new communities, lower interest expense and a $5.2 million gain on sale of assets in 2012.

3. CK's Coffee Shops Closes 10 Locations -

CK’s Coffee Shops has closed 10 of its 12 existing locations, WREG reports.

The shops are owned by Jerry Vela and Randy Gross, who are facing “money problems,” according to the report.

4. AIA Honors Industry’s Local Activity -

Despite hard times, there has been a whirlwind of activity in Memphis’ design community over the past year.

That’s the message Josh Flowers, general counsel at Hnedak Bobo Group Inc. and president of the Memphis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, gave Saturday, March 31, at the annual Celebration of Architecture Gala and 2012 Design Awards at Circuit Playhouse, 66 S. Cooper St.

5. CK’s Moves Into Jackson as Part of Expansion -

A longtime Memphis diner chain is expanding its presence into the Jackson, Tenn., market.

CK’s Coffee Shop has signed a five-year lease for 1,390 square feet of the existing 4,900-square-foot Old Medina Market Gas Station at 2800 Old Medina Road.

6. Education Realty Trust Improves Operating Funds -

Education Realty Trust Inc. on Thursday, Oct. 27, announced third quarter funds from operations (FFO) totaled $500,000 compared to a loss of $32.6 million the same period a year ago.

7. Casino Closures Thump Tunica Economy -

With nine casinos projected to be closed for a minimum of three to six weeks in Tunica County, the anticipated floodwaters carry with them the potential to further devastate an economy already hit hard by the economic downtown.

8. CK’s Owners Honor Traditions -

Randy Gross and Jerry Vela know better than to fiddle with the hash browns at CK’s Coffee Shop.

They’ve pledged to keep the shredded potatoes on the menu and serve them as crispy as ever. Loyal customers, who have made CK’s a Memphis staple for the past 30 years, expect nothing less.

9. CK’s Coffee Shops Sold to Brothers-in-Law -

Randy Gross and Jerry Vela have purchased five of the 11 CK’s Coffee Shops in Memphis and plan to buy the other six in August.
