3. Industrial Revolution -

Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park was completed in 1967, but it’s only now, four-plus decades later, that the property is finally realizing its full potential.

The 3,500-acre industrial park was developed when Memphis and Shelby County paid roughly $4.5 million to buy the land in the late 1950s after city, county and Port Commission leaders saw the need for a large industrial park following the creation of Presidents Island.

Construction is barreling forward on the Paul Lowry Road project, which will provide better access to the Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park south of Downtown.

The six-month project began in June, and a completion date is on target for the second week of December.

9. Electrolux Plant Issued $3.8 Million Mechanical Permit -

The Electrolux North America Cooking Products’ Memphis plant has been issued a mechanical permit for $3.8 million by the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement.

Mechanical Systems Co. LLC of Memphis is listed as the contractor on the application for property at 3231 Paul R. Lowry Road in southwest Memphis’ Frank C. Pidgeon Industrial Park.

10. Ritz Seeks Countywide Sales Tax Hike -

Incoming Shelby County Commission chairman Mike Ritz wants to add a countywide sales tax hike for education to the Nov. 6 ballot.

The move, if approved by voters, would not only trump the half-cent sales tax hikes approved this month for five of the six suburban municipal school districts – it would also lessen the revenue the city of Memphis would get from a half-percent citywide sales tax hike already on the November ballot.

The scope of work includes the foundation, fabrication and construction of the addition, according to the permit, which does not list a general contractor.

The company is planning to increase its manufacturing output by up to 25 percent, create 27 new jobs at its 3601 Paul R. Lowery Road location and acquire about 42 acres on the east side of Paul Lowry from the Port Commission. That new acreage would help expand Nucor’s rail infrastructure.
