1. Local Ad Execs to Present at SXSW Festival -

A pair of admen from Memphis will be in Austin, Texas, presenting at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival that starts later this week.

Archer-malmo chief creative officer and principal Gary Backaus, along with archer-malmo associate creative director and copywriter Justin Dobbs, will be there during the five days’ worth of presentations from leaders in emerging technology.

2. Tech Talk -

It is a pleasant lunchtime hour on a recent weekday, and a small gathering of technologists has huddled at Panera Bread in the Laurelwood shopping center for their monthly confab.

Bloomfield, N.J.-based Atlantic Track & Turnout Co. is expanding its Memphis operations with a 12,900-square-foot pre-engineered metal building addition with a bridge crane at 363 E. Bodley Ave.

4. Helen of Troy Plans Build-to-Suit -

Helen of Troy Ltd., a manufacturer and distributor of household products, has finalized plans to build a 1.3 million-square-foot distribution facility in Olive Branch.

The $37 million facility will be constructed on a 77-acre site in the Whispering Woods development on Polk Lane in DeSoto County. CB Richard Ellis Memphis brokers Patrick Burke, Tommy Jackson and Jim Mercer represented Panattoni Development Co. in the land sale and build-to-suit negotiations to Helen of Troy, which closed on Dec. 28.

5. Archer-Malmo Division Adds To Portfolio -

The new division that ad firm archer-malmo launched last year to invest money and creative capital into digital startups is continuing to expand its portfolio of companies.

That division is a-m ventures, and the newest addition to its portfolio is Paytopia, a startup that’s seeking to add more safety and data security to e-commerce transactions.

6. Harris Named Payroll Specialist At New Patrick Payroll Div. -

Tammy Harris has been named the payroll specialist at Patrick Payroll, a newly branded division of the certified public accounting firm Patrick Accounting and Tax Services PLLC. Patrick Payroll is housed in Patrick Accounting’s office in Germantown.

7. Haversack Gets an Assist from A-M Ventures -

Haversack, one of the companies in the current Seed Hatchery cohort, has received an investment of creative capital from Memphis-based a-m ventures, which invests in early stage digital businesses.

8. CRE Activity Stays Strong During 2011 -

Despite hard times, local commercial real estate firms were able to ink plenty of deals in the past 12 months.

Memphis’ industrial leasing activity kicked off in January when Buena Park, Calif.-based Pacific Logistics Corp. signed a 60,000-square-foot lease in ProLogis Park DeSoto for its first Memphis-area location.

9. Bass Berry Adds Williams to Real Estate Practice -

Bass, Berry & Sims has hired LaToya Williams as an associate in its commercial transactions and real estate practice area. Previously, she was an associate with Stites & Harbison PLLC in Atlanta and Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs in Memphis. Williams received her juris doctorate in 2004 from the University of Tennessee College of Law and is a member of the American, National, Tennessee and Memphis bar associations.

10. Commercial Advisors' Jensen Voted Commercial Broker of the Year -

Larry Jensen has received the 2005 Pinnacle Award for Commercial Broker of the Year from the Memphis Area Association of Realtors' Commercial Council. Jensen is president and CEO of Commercial Advisors LLC. He has more than 30 years of experience in real estate.
