Jeff Liebman has joined Methodist University Hospital as chief executive officer. In his new role, Liebman said, he will ensure the hospital continues to be a community resource providing the highest possible quality of care to the community while following the guidelines of the Methodist LeBonheur mission.

5. Roland ReElected At Filing Deadline, Two Countywide Races Set For August -

One of the six Shelby County Commission incumbents seeking re-election this year was effectively elected to a new four-year term in a new district with the noon Thursday, Feb. 20, filing deadline for candidates in the May county primaries.

6. Henneberger Joins First State Bank Small-Business Lending Division -

Sean Henneberger has joined First State Bank’s small-business lending division as vice president/business development officer in the Memphis market. In his new role, Henneberger will help small businesses pursue loans through the U.S. Small Business Administration and U.S. Department of Agriculture Business and Industry Guaranteed Loan Program.

7. The New Beale -

Over the last four years, the next chapter in the development of Beale Street has been a stop-and-go affair. First would come announcements followed by silence from official channels.

Along with that silence, though, was quiet activity on the side, a movement that culminated with the March announcement of Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s strategic planning committee’s report, “A Framework for Beale Street.”

8. Littler Mendelson Opens Memphis Law Office -

Littler Mendelson P.C., the largest labor and employment law firm in the nation representing management, has opened an office in Memphis.

The firm has joined with Memphis labor firm Kiesewetter Wise Kaplan Prather PLC to form one of the largest labor and employment specialty practices in the region. The Memphis office is Littler’s 56th office and its second in Tennessee.

9. Recorded History -

It began as a handwritten single piece of paper hand-delivered to 25 people in what was once the city of Memphis.

It was 125 years ago that the publication now called The Daily News was founded.

12. Rights Museum Picks Gore, Nash for Freedom Awards -

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Former Vice President Al Gore and civil rights activist Diane Nash were named Tuesday as recipients of the National Civil Rights Museum's annual Freedom Awards.

They will receive the awards at a banquet in Memphis in October. The museum is built around the former Lorraine Motel where civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in 1968.

13. Presidential Hopeful McCain to Speak In Memphis -

When Republican presidential candidate John McCain addresses the Economic Club of Memphis next week, he'll bring to Memphis a campaign that already boasts several connections to the city.

For one thing, McCain - the Arizona senator who's one of a handful of contenders for the GOP's 2008 nomination - has enjoyed a long friendship with FedEx founder and CEO Frederick W. Smith. McCain's presidential exploratory committee was co-chaired by none other than Smith, a Vietnam veteran like McCain.
