3. Council Tackles Blue CRUSH, Wage Theft -

Memphis City Council members take up third and final reading Tuesday, Jan. 8, of an ordinance that sets up a local General Sessions Court-based process for settling “wage theft” complaints.

The Memphis Investors Group will host Robert Shemin, who will discuss how to make money in today’s market, Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Memphis Hilton, 939 Ridge Lake Blvd. An early bird session will be held at 6 p.m. Admission is free for first-time visitors. For more information, call 414-2729.

Methodist South Hospital will hold a lunch and learn titled “Women’s Gynecological Health” Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in meeting room A of the hospital, 1300 Wesley Drive. Free health screenings begin at 11 a.m. and the lecture will be given by Dr. Stephen Ehiremen. Registration is required as seats are limited. 6. Fowlkes to Lead Crime Commission -

Michelle Fowlkes is the new executive director of the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission. Fowlkes, who is regional director of the nonprofit Save The Children, will succeed Linda Miller, who is retiring in February.

7. Fowlkes Takes Helm At Small Business Chamber -

Becoming the executive director of the Memphis Small Business Chamber is another facet of coming home for Andre K. Fowlkes.

Although he’s a native Memphian, he brings a big-city perspective and financial expertise to the job. He’s lived in New York and San Francisco where he worked for high-profile firms Fisher Investments and Guardian Life Insurance Company of America, respectively.
