4. Federal Review of Tobacco Products Grinds to a Halt -

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) – Talk about a smoke break.

Tobacco companies have introduced almost no new cigarettes or smokeless tobacco products in the U.S. in more than 18 months because the federal government has prevented them from doing so, an Associated Press review has found.

5. Obama Carries Shelby, Cohen Over Flinn and Two Tax Hikes Defeated -

President Barack Obama carried Shelby County in unofficial Nov. 6 election returns as his Republican challenger Mitt Romney took the state’s 11 electoral votes.

Voter turnout in the most popular election cycle among Shelby County voters was 61.9 percent, about the same percentage as four years ago. But the 371,256 voters is fewer than 2008 when more than 400,000 Shelby County voters cast ballots. The percentage is about the same because there are fewer registered voters in Shelby County than there were four years ago after a purge by election officials.

6. Ciaramitaro Joins Grace-St. Luke’s as School Counselor -

Licensed clinical social worker Courtney Ciaramitaro has joined Grace-St. Luke’s Episcopal School as school counselor. She will work primarily with middle school students.

7. Fed Unveils Bold, Open-Ended Steps to Aid Economy -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The Federal Reserve unleashed a series of bold and open-ended steps Thursday designed to stimulate the economy by boosting the stock market and making it cheaper for people to borrow and spend.

Races on the Nov. 6 ballot for six sets of suburban school boards took shape Thursday, Aug. 16, at the noon filing deadline for candidate qualifying petitions.

15. US Economy Appears Weaker as Retail Sales Slump -

WASHINGTON (AP) — The outlook for the U.S. economy appeared dimmer Monday after a report that Americans spent less at retail businesses for a third straight month in June.

The report led some economists to downgrade their estimates for economic growth in the April-June quarter. Many now think the economy grew even less than in the first quarter of the year, when it expanded at a sluggish 1.9 percent annual rate.

16. US Employers Still Waiting for Sales to Pick Up -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. economy suddenly looks a lot weaker.

Only 69,000 jobs were added in May, the fewest in a year, and the unemployment rate rose from 8.1 percent to 8.2 percent.

17. JPMorgan Loss Sets Off Call for Heavier Regulation -

WASHINGTON (AP) – A surprise $2 billion trading loss by a division of JPMorgan Chase triggered calls Friday for tougher regulation of banks three years after their near-death experience in the financial crisis.

Amanda Kiser has joined Volunteer Mid-South as community services director. Kiser’s responsibilities include mobilizing and maximizing volunteer resources, coordinating training for partner agencies, creating and leading community projects, and marketing VMS’ benefits to agencies and the public.

Five other incumbents appointed to the seven-district school board seats by the Shelby County Commission filed for re-election at the Thursday, April 5, filing deadline.

21. Cohen-Hart in Congressional Race at Filing Deadline -

The chairman of the countywide school board, Billy Orgel, was effectively elected to his District 7 school board seat without opposition at the Thursday, April 5, filing deadline for candidates on the Aug. 2 primary and general election ballot in Shelby County.

23. J.C. Penney Gets Rid of Hundreds of Sales -

NEW YORK (AP) – J.C. Penney is permanently marking down all of its merchandise by at least 40 percent so shoppers no longer have to wait for sales to get bargains.

Penney said Wednesday that it is getting rid of the hundreds of sales it offers each year in favor of a simpler approach to pricing. Starting on Feb. 1, the retailer is rolling out an "Every Day" pricing strategy with much fewer sales throughout the year.

29. Factory Activity Slows as Economy Stays Sluggish -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. manufacturing grew more slowly in October, hampered by weaker demand for exports and slower production at factories.

But companies ordered more goods, factories slashed their stockpiles and auto sales rose. Those trends suggest manufacturing activity could rebound in coming months.

WASHINGTON (AP) – Unemployment rates rose in July in more than half the states for the second straight month, evidence that job growth remains weak nationwide.

The Labor Department said Friday that unemployment increased in 28 states, fell in nine and remained unchanged in 13. Those are nearly the same figures as in June, when unemployment rose in 28 states, fell in eight and was unchanged in 14.

35. Automakers Rebound in July to Lift Factory Output -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. automakers rebounded in July to boost factory production by the most since the Japan crisis. But builders broke ground on fewer single-family houses, leaving home construction at depressed levels.

36. Tiger Gift Shop Moves To Larger Space -

Tiger Gift Shop is relocating a few doors down from its current location on the Highland Strip near the University of Memphis.

The university retailer, now at 549 S. Highland St., has signed a new 5,000-square-foot lease at 531 S. Highland, in the space formerly occupied by From One Greek to Another.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A mixed slate of reports Thursday showed the economy is being held back by high gas prices and sluggish hiring.

Economists are forecasting a pick-up in growth in the second half of the year. But the latest data revealed only faint signs of a turnaround.

41. Tenn.’s Duncan Among Congressmen Suing Obama Over Libya Strikes -

WASHINGTON (AP) – A bipartisan group of 10 lawmakers is suing President Barack Obama for taking military action against Libya without war authorization from Congress.

Among the lawmakers is U.S. Rep. Jimmy Duncan, R-Tenn., who represents Tennessee’s Second District: Knox, Blount, Loudon, Monroe and McMinn counties, as well as a potion of Sevier County.

WASHINGTON (AP) – A steady decline in layoffs is giving the vast majority of adults who have jobs the confidence to spend more freely and help energize the economy. They no longer worry so much about losing their jobs.

NEW YORK (AP) – Packed malls? Healthy gains in holiday spending? It's beginning to look at least a little like a pre-recession Christmas.

Americans spent more on clothing, luxury goods and even furniture, delivering healthy gains across the board, according to MasterCard Advisors' SpendingPulse, which tracks spending across all transactions including cash. The online category continued to be a bright spot. The big exception was consumer electronics, dragged down by deep discounting of TVs amid a glut. That area was virtually unchanged from a year ago.

47. Jobless Benefit Applications Drop to 453K -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Applications for jobless benefits dropped last week for the third time in four weeks, a sign that employers are cutting fewer jobs.

New claims for jobless benefits fell by 16,000 to a seasonally adjusted 453,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. Still, they are higher than they would be in a healthy economy and not low enough to signal rapid job growth.

49. County Commission Off To Partisan, Lively Start -

Shelby County Commissioners found plenty to debate during their first meeting as a body since six new commissioners took office Sept. 1.

Monday’s session saw the election of Democrat Sidney Chism as the chairman of the 13 member body for the next year.

NEW YORK (AP) - Americans' confidence in the economy rose in May for the third straight month, fueled by growing optimism about future job prospects.

Still, many worry improvements in shoppers' mood and spending may be reversed because of sharp declines on Wall Street fueled by fears that a debt crisis in Europe could hammer global growth. Already, there are signs pointing to a weakening business at stores in May after a solid spring season.

60. Memphis Bar Assn. Elects New Officers, Board Members -

At the Memphis Bar Association’s Annual Meeting Thursday at The Peabody hotel, the MBA announced its 2010 officers and new members of its board of directors.

Immediate past president Art Quinn passed the gavel to incoming president Ricky E. Wilkins of the Law Offices of Ricky E. Wilkins. John Cannon of Shuttleworth Williams PLLC and Gary K. Smith of Apperson Crump & Maxwell PLC automatically move to the positions of vice president/president-elect and treasurer, respectively. WASHINGTON (AP) - A U.S. House of Representatives' panel voted Thursday to regulate for the first time privately traded derivatives, the kind of exotic financial instruments that helped bring down Lehman Brothers and nearly toppled American International Group.

63. Herenton Faces Child Support Issues -

Michael J. Herenton turned 5 over the weekend. It was a difficult transition.

He and his mother, Claudine Marsh, had to move out of their home in the Atlanta area because of flooding.

Meanwhile, Marsh has been talking by phone with her son’s father, former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, about his recent decision to quit his job. Herenton’s last day in office was July 31.

64. UPDATE: Herenton Income To Be Examined In Child Support Petition -

The mother of a 4-year-old child who is the son of former Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton wants to know more about how he makes his money now that he’s out of work.

The petition for contempt and to modify child support filed in Juvenile Court Thursday seeks to change the child support payments for Michael J. Herenton.

Dr. Vicki Murrell has been named assistant dean of distance education for the University of Memphis.

66. Pera Appointed Special Adviser For ABA Strategic Communications Committee -

Lucian Pera of Adams and Reese LLP has been appointed as a special adviser of the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Strategic Communications for a one-year term.

67. Poet Combines Hip-Hop Style With Christian Message -

Most area music stores have sections for hip-hop and contemporary Christian music, but there haven’t been any albums that could be found in both sections until now. Memphis hip-hop artist Mr. Del released his third solo album June 29 to the delight and perhaps curiosity of local fans.

Commercial real estate suffered a sharp decline in May, with sales falling dramatically from the same month a year ago and the previous month.

Shelby County saw just 35 commercial sales in May, marking a 49 percent dropoff from 69 sales in May 2008 and a 35 percent dropoff from 54 sales in April, according to the latest data from real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

The Wesley Highland Manor senior nursing facility at 3549 Norriswood Ave. near the University of Memphis has sold for $7.3 million to FC Highlands LLC, a single-purpose entity related to Alpharetta, Ga.-based Formation Capital. The sale closed May 11; the seller was Wesley Highland Nursing Homes Inc.

NEW YORK (AP) - The anger was evident at Citigroup Inc.'s annual meeting, where all nominated directors were elected but shareholders took turns at the microphone to vociferously object to the bank's performance over the past year.

77. Bus Company Sues School Board for $4.5M -

A local bus company that for many years provided specialized transportation services for Memphis City Schools has filed a $4.5 million lawsuit against the board of education after the school district ended its contract with the company earlier this year.

Details: Michael Lightman Realty Co. has filed two more permits for construction on the 250,000-square-foot Centennial Commons shopping center on Polo Grounds Boulevard., north of Winchester Road, east of Tenn. 385 and south of Callis Cutoff Road. Lightman will build stores for Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores and Dollar Tree Stores Inc., with construction beginning in the next two weeks and finishing later in the year, said Michael Lightman Jr. Those two retailers will join JCPenney and Dick’s Sporting Goods; construction already has begun on those stores.
Lightman said the shopping center has room for more tenants, but he will wait for users and build stores to suit. He is targeting additional retail shops for the remaining space, looking for holes in the busy 385/Winchester/Hacks Cross area. “We’re trying to meet all needs,” he said. “It’s going to be very nice.”
Lightman said Centennial Commons’ first openings should occur in October. “JCPenney will be open sooner, but they’re a little bit ahead of everybody else,” Lightman said. Centennial Commons is part of the 300-acre Centennial Park project, which Michael Lightman Realty Co. has been developing for a decade. Centennial Park includes retail stores, medical offices, restaurants, a hotel and apartments.
