1. Shelby County Party Heads Look Ahead to Primaries -

As Shelby County Democrats try to improve on losing every countywide office to Republicans in the 2010 county elections, party leaders are also warning political figures who identify as Democrats not to cross party lines.

2. County Primary Filing Deadline Arrives -

A couple of days before the filing deadline for candidates in the May county primaries, it looked like a political season with lots of action at the deadline itself.

The deadline is noon Thursday, Feb. 20, with another week for any candidates who meet that deadline to withdraw if they wish.

3. Election Filing Pace Quickens as Deadline Nears -

The May 6 Shelby County primary races began to move toward their final form Monday, Feb. 17, just ahead of the noon Thursday filing deadline for candidates.

Shelby County Commissioner Steve Mulroy brought the Democratic primary race for county mayor to four as he filed his qualifying petition Monday afternoon.

4. Memphis Bar Association Announces New Positions -

The Memphis Bar Association has its new officers for 2013.

Linda Warren Seely, director of private attorney involvement with Memphis Area Legal Services Inc., is the 2013 president. Kirk Caraway, an attorney with Allen, Summers, Simpson, Lillie & Gresham PLLC, is the new vice president. Tommy Parker, an attorney with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC is the new secretary/treasurer.

An attorney by day, Linda Harris spends her evenings and weekends enriching children’s lives through Friendship Safehaven, the Memphis area nonprofit she established just more than five years ago.

7. Election Commission Website Causes Confusion -

The information was there somewhere on the www.shelbyvote.com website, Shelby County Election Commission staffers insist.

It was just somewhere that most politicos interested in basic information about the four countywide races on the March 6 primary ballot couldn’t find.

8. County Primary Ballot Set With 3 Exits and 2 DQs - One of the four sets of Shelby County primaries on the March 6 ballot was decided at the Thursday, Dec. 15, deadline for candidates to withdraw from the ballot.

The Shelby County Election Commission Thursday certified 16 candidates in the two sets of primaries for four county offices and one independent candidate who advances automatically to the Aug. 2 county general elections.

11. Deadline Looms For Candidates In March Primaries -

There is the paperwork and there are the deadlines in politics. And then there are the campaigns that begin long before the paperwork or deadlines.

One group of candidates in the 2012 election cycle is approaching its first deadline Thursday, Dec. 8, at noon – the filing deadline for the March 6 county primaries.

Memphis City Council member Harold Collins says he has become “the wrecker city councilman” – the council member who garners the lion’s share of complaints about rogue tow truck operators and complaints from tow truck operators.

16. Cazassa Crossing Sold Back to Bank -

The Cazassa Crossing apartment complex at 3539 Cazassa Road in Whitehaven has been sold back to the lender, New Jersey-based MFC Funding LLC, following a foreclosure. The bank on April 30 bought the 248-unit complex for $1.4 million on the courthouse steps in a substitute trustee’s deed.

Linda Martin has joined UT Medical Group Inc. as vice president of corporate compliance.

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center will host its seventh annual Dean's Symposium today from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library, 3030 Poplar Ave. Dr. Marion Dugdale, professor of hematology, and Dr. Gabor Tigyi, professor of physiology, will be featured speakers.

21. Harmon Receives Pro Bono Award -

Whitney Harmon, an attorney at Glankler Brown PLLC, has received the first Frank J. Glankler Jr. Pro Bono Award.

Glankler Brown committed this year to taking a minimum of 35 pro bono cases each year from Memphis Area Legal Services, an organization that provides legal assistance for people unable to afford representation. Harmon practices in the area of civil litigation and is a member of the American, Tennessee, Kentucky and Memphis Bar Associations, as well as the Association for Women Attorneys.

Dr. Dava F. Gerard has been appointed administrator for the Methodist Healthcare Cancer Center. She previously was the founding vice president and chief operating officer of the Nevada Cancer Institute in Las Vegas.

24. Burford to Help Develop PR Efforts For Memphis Area Teachers' Credit Union -

Marc Burford has been promoted to business development coordinator at Memphis Area Teachers' Credit Union (MATCU). In his new role, Burford will be responsible for helping develop public relations and for coordinating various public functions that promote MATCU's products and services. He started working at MATCU in 2003 as a sales associate and was promoted to an assistant branch manager in 2004.

25. Estate Planning Council Elects Officers -

The Memphis Estate Planning Council announced the following officers for 2005-2006: David B. Jones, president; Frank E. Davis, vice president; Jeffrey E. Thompson, secretary; James L.
