Memphis manufacturers of hip implants began touting the safety records of their products this week because of a spate of recent news reports about complications with “metal-on-metal” bearings.
An editorial in the January edition of The Journal of Arthroplasty titled “Metal on Metal: Is It Worth the Risk” was followed by a March 3 article in The New York Times. A few days later, the newspaper reported DePuy Orthopaedics, which is based in Warsaw, Ind., had warned doctors that its ASR metal-on-metal appeared to have a high failure rate.
