1. Kyle Senate Seat Vacancy Process Begins -

Local Democratic leaders began taking applications Monday, Aug. 18, for the state Senate District 30 seat in the Tennessee Legislature that becomes vacant Sept. 1.

And Shelby County Democratic Party Chairman Bryan Carson scheduled a caucus of local party executive committee members from District 30 on Aug. 28 to discuss the vacancy.

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

3. Baptist-Collierville Names Chief Nursing Officer -

Denise Ferguson is the new chief nursing officer at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Collierville.

In addition to overseeing the nursing staff and working with the hospital’s leadership team, Ferguson will take a lead role in the hospital’s March 11 rollout of Baptist OneCare, Baptist’s electronic health record, slated to begin in phases throughout the Baptist system by the middle of 2015.

5. Pogue to Lead Public Affairs For Local Corps of Engineers -

Jim Pogue has been selected chief of the Public Affairs Office of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Memphis District.

Pogue has worked for the Corps of Engineers for more than 19 years in public affairs positions. Pogue will be responsible for managing the Memphis District’s public information, internal communications and community relations programs.
