1. Starting Up -

Shawn Flynn and Ryan Ramkhelawan have, both literally and figuratively, come a long way in a few months.

They moved to Memphis recently to bring their medical industry-focused startup here and take it through the inaugural round of a new startup accelerator program, ZeroTo510. Since the end of that program – a boot camp-style mix of mentorship, networking and related instruction that came with an infusion of cash – their startup Restore Medical Solutions got a term sheet and an invitation to negotiate for a Series A round of venture capital funding.

2. Memphis’ ZeroTo510 to Aid Startups -

Memphis Bioworks Foundation and Innova have launched ZeroTo510, an accelerator program to help entrepreneurs bring medical devices and companies to market.

Applications are due April 5, and through a competitive process, six startups will be selected to participate in a 12-week, mentor-driven program that will include instruction and hands-on activities to guide entrepreneurs through the process.

4. FDA Proposals Could Affect Memphis Medical Companies -

Memphis medical device companies are closely looking at new recommendations released late Tuesday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration that affect the approval track for many of their products.

Innova Memphis and the Memphis Bioworks Foundation have launched the Mid-South Angel Network, which will link investors with promising startup companies.

Matt Kisber, commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development, and Reagan Farr, the commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Revenue, were on hand for Thursday’s announcement.

Innova Memphis and the Memphis Bioworks Foundation announced Thursday the launch of the Mid-South Angel Network, which will link investors with promising startup companies.

7. Innova Raises More Than $14 Million -

The Innova Fund II LP has raised in excess of $14 million that will be invested in startup ventures through a new state program.

8. Innova Courts Insurance Cos. For $20 Million -

Instead of taking it easy during the holidays, Innova officials will be calling on the corporate offices of insurance companies in a quest to raise $20 million by Jan. 1.

Insurance companies that invest with Innova Fund II LP – one of six venture funds selected Friday for a new state economic development initiative – will receive tax credits. The credits will allow insurance companies to offset a portion of their premium tax liabilities while they provide funding for fast-growth startup ventures.

9. Innova to Invest in Student Business Projects -

Innova Memphis Inc. will invest $12,500 in seed money to each of the companies launched by four students selected for a new “Entrepreneur MBA” program at the University of Memphis.

10. State Venture Fund Established For High-Growth Startups -

Gov. Phil Bredesen last week signed into law legislation that will provide venture money for new companies with high growth potential, such as those involved in biotechnology and other innovations.

15. Biotech Originator Helps New Crop Of Inventors -

The entrepreneur who created Memphis' first biotech business is now helping a new generation of inventors.

Preston Dorsett three weeks ago was named executive in residence at Memphis Bioworks Foundation, but has quickly gravitated to Innova, a business development project that grew out of Bioworks. Innova identifies promising technology and helps scientists turn their ideas into new local businesses.

16. New Innova Prez Hits Ground Running -

When Ken Woody started his new job in the past couple of weeks, he already had a backlog of work, which he's more than doubled since then.

Woody is the first president of Innova, a novel business development project spun out of Memphis Bioworks Foundation. Innova's mission is to identify promising ideas and help turn them into viable local businesses, particularly in the fields of biotechnology and logistics. On Woody's first day he had eight candidates; his portfolio since has grown to 18, with about three new, unsolicited proposals showing up each week.
