1. Memphis Bar Judicial Poll Released -

The Memphis Bar Association poll of attorneys on the judicial races on the Aug. 7 ballot shows 16 percent to as high as 38 percent of the attorneys participating have no opinion in many of the judicial races.

2. Harris Files Ford Challenge at Deadline -

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

3. Suburban Superintendents Start Work -

Each of their contracts now approved, the superintendents and directors of Shelby County six suburban school systems sat down Tuesday, Jan. 7, around the same table for the first time to talk about how to build their school districts.

4. Wright Joins Magna Bank as Senior Vice President -

Andy Wright has joined Memphis-based Magna Bank as senior vice president and manager of commercial banking. Wright, who previously held senior vice president positions at Iberiabank and First Tennessee Bank, has experience working with a variety of industries, with in-depth expertise in the transportation and logistics industries.

5. County Commission Approves School Funding -

Shelby County Commissioners approved $13.9 million in funding for computer software and a program to handle the human resources and financial needs of the merged school system to come.

The original request was for $15 million and including contingency funding in the event the project had cost overruns.

6. Blotner Named Communications Specialist for Impact Marketing -

Jonathan D. Blotner has joined Impact Marketing as a corporate communications specialist. In his new role, Blotner will head all public relations efforts within the company, assist in research and development of new business, as well as create new interactive media opportunities for Impact's clients. Blotner formerly was CEO and media director of J. Blotner Advertising & PR in New Orleans.

7. Mathews Named to New Post at FedEx Institute -

Eric Mathews was named associate director of corporate research and development at the University of Memphis FedEx Institute of Technology. Mathews previously served FIT in temporary roles directing research and business development and was part of the institute's founding executive management. He earned a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College and a master's degree from the University of Memphis.
