Shelby County Democratic Party chairman Van Turner probably faces a challenge in his bid for another two years in the position and the challenger is probably Shelby County Commissioner Justin Ford.

4. Races Open For Two County School Board Seats -

The Aug. 5 elections will feature two races for open seats on the Shelby County school board.

At the noon Thursday filing deadline for the four odd-numbered district seats as well as the state and federal primaries, board member Anne Edmiston did not file for another four-year term. Board member Teresa Price had announced earlier that she would not be running either.

6. Finch Appointed to Dean Position At UofM School of Nursing -

Dr. Linda Finch has been appointed associate dean and director of undergraduate programs for the Loewenberg School of Nursing at the University of Memphis. Finch was previously an associate professor on the nursing faculty. She has been named an American Nurses Foundation Scholar by the American Nurses Association and is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society for nursing. She also has served on the editorial board of “The Tennessee Nurse.”

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Even in reliably red states where Barack Obama has little chance of winning Tuesday, unprecedented numbers of registrations and early votes have been tallied, and elections officials are predicting a record turnout in places where neither candidate even bothered to campaign.
