1. Herff Jones Inc. Chooses Chief Operating Officer -

Jeff Webb, founder and CEO of Memphis-based Varsity Brands Inc., will be the new president and chief operating officer effective Jan. 1 at Herff Jones Inc., a manufacturer of graduation-related items like yearbooks, rings, caps and gowns.

3. Wharton, Fullilove & Conrad Re-Elected -- Harris-Ford to Runoff - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. won a full four-year term of office as mayor Thursday, Oct. 6, two years after he claimed the mayor’s office in a special election.

And all 12 of the Memphis City Council members seeking re-election won new four year terms in the city election cycle, marking the largest return of incumbents to the 13-member council in the 43-year history of the mayor-council form of government.

4. Varsity Brands Merges with Herff Jones -

Memphis-based Varsity Brands Inc., a provider of education training and equipment for the school spirit market, has reached an agreement to merge with Herff Jones, a manufacturer and publisher of educational products, recognition awards and graduation-related items.

5. 4 Council Members - All 3 City Court Judges To Run Unopposed In Oct. Elections -

Four incumbent Memphis City Council members and all three incumbent City Court Judges were effectively re-elected at the Thursday, July 21, noon deadline for candidates to file their qualifying petitions for the Oct. 6 Memphis ballot.

6. MCS Board Votes To Surrender Charter -

The Memphis City Schools (MCS) board has approved surrendering the school system’s charter subject to a referendum by Memphis voters early in the new year.

The resolution was approved on a 5-4 vote by the MCS board after hours of often emotional debate in which even Supt. Dr. Kriner Cash took a stand.

7. MCS to Consider Charter Surrender Resolution -

Memphis City Schools board members may make the most important decision of their tenures Monday night with a resolution to surrender the school system’s charter.

If the resolution passes and is then sent to the Shelby County Election Commission, the charter would go to Memphis voters for a referendum sometime in March.

8. Whalum and Webb Draw Challengers In School Board Races -

Memphis school board members Betty Mallott and Martavius Jones were unopposed at Thursday’s filing deadline for the four Memphis school board races on the Nov. 2 ballot. Noon was the deadline for candidates to file their qualifying petitions in the school board races as well as three sets of municipal elections in Bartlett, Collierville and Germantown.

9. Applicants Submit Resumes to Head CCC -

A search for successors to departing Center City Commission president Jeff Sanford has generated significant local interest.

Out of more than 70 applicants who submitted resumes to the CCC’s executive search team, the field appears to be narrowing to around 20 people who most closely fit the job description.

10. Tutor Receives Transplant Nursing Excellence Award -

Dr. Ruth Tutor has received the 2007 Transplant Nursing Excellence Award from the International Transplant Nurses Society. Tutor is a Critical Care/Transplant Advance Practice Nurse at Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute. She has worked with transplant patients since 1985. She joined the nursing staff at the Transplant Institute in 2004.

11. Attorney Webb Brewer Named Public Service Attorney of the Year -

The Tennessee Bar Association and the Access to Justice Committee have named attorney Webb Brewer 2005 Public Service Attorney of the Year. Brewer has been director of advocacy and general counsel for Memphis Area Legal Services for 26 years.
