From Overton Square to the Hi-Tone Cafe to the Levitt Shell, Midtown Memphis is gearing up to “Rock for Love.”

Now in its sixth year, the annual music-based fundraiser for Memphis’ Church Health Center – the nation’s largest faith-based health care ministry for working, uninsured people and their families – will take place over a four-day period from Thursday, Sept. 6, through Sunday, Sept. 9.

3. Life as Touring Musician Preps Stockwell for PR Role -

Punk-rock musician Marvin Stockwell says life on the road touring the United States, Canada and Europe with his band Pezz uniquely prepared him for his professional role as longtime public relations manager at the Church Health Center.

4. Tying it all Together -

University of Memphis art student Alex Smythe, who grew up in the Vollintine-Evergreen neighborhood, is extending an invitation to all Memphians to celebrate the revitalization of one of the city’s most diverse communities with the first annual V&E Greenline Artwalk.

5. Cos., Churches Deliver Christmas Cheer to Perea -

Perched on a stool and wearing a blue-and-gray Memphis Tigers Santa hat, one-man-band Jeff Hulett led a group of preschoolers in singing “Feliz Navidad” Wednesday, Dec. 14, at Perea Preschool, located inside Klondike Elementary School in North Memphis.

6. Rock for Love to Again Benefit Church Health Center -

More than two dozen Memphis musical acts – from the Bo Keys to the Subteens to Star & Micey – will take the stage between Thursday, Aug. 18, and Sunday, Aug. 21, to “Rock for Love” at the Hi-Tone Cafe, 1930 Poplar Ave., and two other venues.

7. Rock for Love: A Benefit With Edge -

Five years ago, Marvin Stockwell and Jeff Hulett, the Church Health Center’s guitar-swinging public relations duo, decided to throw a benefit concert featuring local and regional bands.

8. Bikes on the Big Screen -

What has two wheels, costs nothing to enjoy and promotes healthy living? A film festival, of course.

Organizers of Live From Memphis’ Bikesploitation Bike and Film Festival hope the mixture of bicycles and film will add one more layer of learning and fun to the Center City Commission’s second annual Bike to Work Day, set for Friday.

9. Rock for Love Turns 4 With Blowout Bash -

The problem with launching a great new event is that after a few years everybody wants to be a part of it. Actually that’s no problem at all for the organizers of Rock for Love 4, benefiting the Church Health Center (CHC).

10. Lucero to Headline Rock for Love 4 -

Rock For Love 4, the annual Church Health Center benefit concert to be held Aug. 19 through Aug. 21 at the Hi Tone and Shangri-La Records, will feature headlining acts Lucero and Amy LaVere.

Other bands set to play include the Dirty Streets, Star and Micey, Oracle and the Mountain, Bulletproof Vests and Glorie.

11. Rock-n-Romp Moves Indoors for Special Christmas Celebration -

They won’t be playing classics such as “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” but a group of local family-friendly rock bands has plans to add a seasonal twist to a live music show.

On Saturday at 2 p.m., Rock-n-Romp, a group of young parents who enjoy concerts, will stage its first planned indoor concert as well as its first with a holiday theme.

12. Rock for Love 3 Ready To Showcase Memphis Music -

The beat goes on as the Church Health Center sets the stage for Rock for Love 3, the third annual bonanza of garage rock bands and local celebs sharing their sounds to support the working poor.

Jeff Hulett, public relations and communications coordinator for CHC, said the two-night event, Friday and Aug. 22 at the Hi-Tone and Shangri-La Records in Midtown, has been declared a recession-free event.

13. Nonprofit Orgs. Adjust To Changing Demands -

An economy that keeps slumping has put thousands of people out of work in the Mid-South, increasing the demands on nonprofit agencies at a time when their investment funds have dwindled.

So far, people of the Mid-South have met that challenge by increasing their giving, according to three charitable organizations: The Community Foundation of Greater Memphis, Church Health Center and the United Way of the Mid-South.

14. ‘Rock for Love’ Kicks Off Tonight -

“Aristo-crunk,” noted regional garage bands and headliner hip-hop fill the program for the “SunTrust Rock for Love 2” concert Friday and Saturday to benefit the Church Health Center.

Event organizers said growing the sequel to last year’s debut concert was simply a matter of getting out of the way and letting it happen.
