When the U.S. Transportation Department announced which projects across the country would get a share of $500 million in TIGER grants, it came after local leaders made a series of decisions of their own about a combination of state and federal funding that traveled different paths from the same coffers to two Memphis projects.

7. Grubb & Ellis’ deWitt Appointed To MAAR Commercial Council -

Greg deWitt of Grubb & Ellis Co. has been appointed to the Memphis Area Association of Realtors Commercial Council. He will take over one of the council’s director seats next year before becoming the council’s vice president in 2012.

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - An Austin Peay State University assistant professor has announced he will run next year as a Democrat for the seat held by Republican U.S. Rep. Marsha Blackburn.

Some of the most expensive pieces of commercial real estate in Shelby County are the area’s shopping malls. Reappraisal notices sent out last week to the mall owners show the degree to which that’s the case.

10. Herman Morris Proposes Green Use for The Pyramid -      It's one of the most prominent "big empties" in Memphis, but instead of the Bass Pro Shops mega-store that's been proposed for it, one current mayoral candidate has something different in mind for The Pyramid arena.

12. Carmony Named Newcomer of the Year -

Brad Carmony has been named Newcomer of the Year in the 2006 MPACT Maker Awards. The award recognizes individuals who have lived in Memphis for a short time, but who have made significant contributions to the community. Carmony is the public relations manager at inferno. He also serves on the regional advisory board of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association of Tennessee, the Exchange Club Family Center's Gala Committee and as a member of the Shelby County Humane Society's Pet Set organization.

13. Health Care Options Increase in DeSoto -

Take a quick drive down the southbound leg of Interstate 55, and it's hard to miss the signs of expansion under way at Baptist Memorial Hospital-DeSoto.

Take a not-so-quick drive down one of Southaven's most congested thoroughfares - Airways Boulevard - and growth is also evident along what is now DeSoto County's medical district.

14. Suburbs Promote New Industrial Development -

Municipalities such as Arlington, Bartlett, Collierville and Millington - all of which pride themselves on rural charm, cozy town squares and a slower pace of life - are at the same time maintaining busy industrial centers that are growing and thriving.

15. Public Administrator Named for Probate Court -

The Shelby County Commission appointed Scott Peatross to the position of public administrator in Shelby County Probate Court. Peatross is a partner in the law firm of Bateman Gibson LLC. He graduated from Rhodes College and Tulane Law School.
