The second in an occasional series, “The Anatomy of a Sandwich.”
Most sources agree that the Cuban sandwich, or the Cubano, came to Florida in the 1860s with Cuban cigar makers who settled in Key West and later, in the 1880s, in Ybor City, a neighborhood of Tampa noted for its cigar factories. The sandwich received a boost in Miami from the influx of Cuban exiles and expatriates who fled their island home after the success of Castro’s revolution in 1959.

Seamus Loftus sits down for an interview on the mezzanine of his new Irish pub, The Brass Door, looks over at a ventilation duct next to him, runs a finger along one edge and purses his lips in disapproval. He calls a staff member over. “Look,” he says, “I’m not mad, and I don’t remember who’s in charge upstairs, but there’s dust all over these vents. This is unacceptable. The Real-Life Adventure Serial. “I’m going to see Halliburton Tower,” I told the Rhodes College guard. “Why?” Why indeed. On what appear to be the tower’s main doors a sign says, ironically, “Please use main door.” The tribute to Richard Halliburton that I’m told used to grace the space behind those locked doors has been covered in carpet, now the office of a college vice president. Not only is it difficult to find much evidence of Halliburton in Memphis, you can’t find much of him in his own memorial bell tower.

As the housing market continues to improve, a significant backlog of foreclosed and distressed properties that have not been put on the market could bring the recovery to a screeching halt.

And with the fledgling recovery in housing still weak, banks, institutional investors and even some homeowners who want to sell their homes are waiting until the market shows marked improvement.
