Almost 25 years after a surgical team at Baptist Memorial Hospital performed the city’s first heart transplant, more people than ever are getting a second chance at life in its operating room.

Over the years, 286 heart transplants and 86 lung transplants have occurred at the hospital. The 25th anniversary of the first heart transplant occurs next month.

Details: The developer of an Alzheimer’s facility called the Gardens of Germantown has filed an $8 million construction loan through Deutsche Bank Berkshire Mortgage Inc.

6. Baptist Files $4.4M Auditorium Permit -

Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis has filed a $4.4 million permit with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement to build an auditorium on its Walnut Grove campus. The hospital in June broke ground on the 282-seat auditorium, to be named in honor of the late Dr. H. Edward Garrett Sr., a surgeon who performed the world’s first successful heart bypass surgery in 1964, three years before he joined the staff of the Memphis hospital.

7. Baptist to Hold Conference Center Groundbreaking Ceremony -

Officials at Baptist Memorial Hospital Memphis will hold a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday for a $6.9 million project that will bring a conference center to the campus.

The conference center will include an auditorium named in honor of the late Dr. H. Edward Garrett Sr., a surgeon who performed the world’s first successful heart bypass surgery in 1964, three years before he joined the staff of the Memphis hospital.

8. AIG CEO Says Employees Starting to Return Bonuses -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The head of battered insurance giant AIG told Congress on Wednesday that “we’ve heard the American people loudly and clearly” in their rage over executive bonuses and appealed to employees to voluntarily return at least half of the money.

9. Commission to Vote On New Judge -

The candidates will outnumber commissioners today when the Shelby County Board of Commissioners votes on a new General Sessions Criminal Court judge.

There are 15 candidates for the Division 10 judgeship that became vacant with the Jan. 2 death of veteran jurist Anthony Johnson. There are 13 county commissioners.
