1. Bar Prez Plans Year of Service -

During this month’s annual meeting of the Memphis Bar Association, the gavel was passed to a new president who pushed for his colleagues to take summer interns at their firms.

It’s part of a community-minded spirit that private attorney Ricky Wilkins made a theme of his just-ended tenure as the MBA president. And Shuttleworth Williams PLLC partner John Cannon, the MBA’s new president, is picking up right where Wilkins left off.

2. Dewald Selected to Chair Life and Health Insurance Foundation -

Jack Dewald will serve as chairman of the board for the Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education.

Dewald is president and owner of Agency Services Inc.

3. MBA Accepts Applications For Atty. Leadership Forum -

The Memphis Bar Association is accepting applications for its 2009-2010 Leadership Forum for attorneys. The applications will be due Aug. 14 and applicants will be notified of acceptance Aug. 21.

The accepted applicants will begin the program Sept. 18 with a retreat at the Lichterman Nature Center.

4. Career Center Site To Serve Laid-Off Attorneys -

Memphis Legal Placement Inc., a program of the Memphis Bar Association, earlier this week launched a new Attorney Career Center Web site to help laid-off or unemployed attorneys find local work.

5. Southern, National Law Firm Mergers Up in ’08 -

Nationwide, law firm mergers and acquisitions jumped to 70 in 2008, according to a study by Altman Weil Inc., an independently owned law firm consulting agency. Nationally, Altman Weil recorded 60 mergers and acquisitions in 2007 – meaning 2008 saw a 17 percent increase.

6. Memphis Bar AssociationWins National Award -      The Memphis Bar Association has been named the recipient of a 2007 Luminary Award for Excellence in Regular Publications. The award is given by the National Association of Bar Executives.

11. Law Week Promises Buzz of Activity For Attorneys and Non-Attorneys Alike -

From April 26 to May 6, lawyers and judges in the Memphis area will use Law Week to volunteer in the community and reflect on the importance of the practice of law. A variety of events will unfold throughout the week, with everything from a blood drive to a reception honoring attorneys who do pro bono work.

12. Young Lawyers Division Gears Up for 2006 -

The Memphis Bar Association's Young Lawyers Division recently elected a new set of leaders to govern the division's coming year.

Among the newly elected was Kirk Caraway, who assumed the YLD presidency Nov. 17 at the group's annual meeting and elections. Shannon Toon of Hill Boren PC was elected as 2006 vice president.
