1. Schools Demerger Reflects Cooperation, Competition -

For now, Shelby County’s seven public school systems are cooperating and competing with one another often at the same time on the way to the demerger of public education in August.

The same dual existence is playing itself out between the Shelby County Schools board and parents of children who have attended schools about to be in the suburban school systems but who live outside the six cities and towns.

2. Book Blitz -

Literacy Mid-South is spending part of this month literally surrounded by books.

The nonprofit, which is promoting the national Read Across America initiative in March, is in the process of collecting some 3,000 books (valued at $48,000) to give away. And in the meantime, those books will need to be somehow stored in the organization’s 1,300-square-foot office.

6. Shelby County Schools Receives $1M Arts Grant -

Shelby County Schools has received a $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to benefit 17 Shelby County elementary and middle schools.

The three-year grant will enable county schools to participate in the Professional Development for Arts Educators “Arts in Education” program.

8. Harding Academy Buys Cordova Property -

Harding Academy of Memphis Inc. has bought a residential property next to its Macon Road campus in Cordova. The school paid $665,000 for a 6.3-acre lot at 8436 Macon Road from Kathleen Tower, Betty Copeland, Donald R. Downs and Charles A. Downs. The sale closed Oct. 1.

9. SCS Education Foundation Awards $10K to 13 Schools -

The Shelby County Schools Education Foundation has awarded $10,000 in Community Enhancement Pass-Thru funds allocated by state Rep. Ron Lollar for Shelby County Schools.

Thirty-seven Mini-Grant Applications were submitted for projects supporting science and mathematics, educational instruction for children with special education needs and equipment for the arts and physical education.
