1. Cardinals’ Influence Brings Change to Redbirds -

You don’t have to be in uniform to get cut from the team. Several folks working for the Memphis Redbirds found that out a few days ago.

Multiple sources said several people lost their jobs, just as the Redbirds’ contract with management company Global Spectrum is expiring at the end of September. The Redbirds, of course, were purchased by their parent St. Louis Cardinals as part of the deal that had the city buying AutoZone Park and leasing it back to the Cardinals on a 17-year term.

2. Attendance Woes to Bring Changes at AutoZone Park -

As the Memphis Redbirds closed out their regular-season home schedule at AutoZone Park this past week, pitcher Tim Cooney set a franchise record with his 14th win and the Redbirds widened their lead over second-place Nashville in the Pacific Coast League American Southern Division.

3. Commission Approves Ballpark Deal -

The deal for the city of Memphis to buy AutoZone Park and the St. Louis Cardinals to buy the Memphis Redbirds franchise is on its way to a mid-February closing.

Shelby County Commission approval of the county’s part of the deal Monday, Jan. 27, came with a lot of reluctance and some of the same complaints Memphis City Council members had last month – primarily that they were being rushed.

4. Commission Approves Other Part of Ballpark Deal -

Shelby County Commissioners reluctantly approved county government’s part of the AutoZone Park deal Monday, Jan. 27, despite delaying a vote on it at committee sessions last week.

The item was added onto the commission’s agenda by chairman James Harvey who said he could because it was “time sensitive.”

5. Don’t Take Ballpark, Team for Granted -

Way back in the 1990s, when Downtown Memphis was The Peabody hotel and a bus station and not much more, Memphis Redbirds founder Dean Jernigan went on a tour of major-league ballparks.

6. In Need of Relief -

Perhaps it is only too appropriate that baseball is played without a clock. For securing the future of the Memphis Redbirds may require extra innings, not to mention extra effort.

The ballpark was on the leading edge of revitalizing Downtown when it opened in 2000 at Third and Union. This, of course, was “B.G.” in Memphis – Before the Grizzlies. Also, before FedExForum. The city was ready for something big and bold – something that showed Memphis could overachieve, not underachieve.
