2. New TSA Policy on Knives, Bats Sparks Backlash -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Flight attendants, pilots, federal air marshals and even insurance companies are part of a growing backlash to the Transportation Security Administration's new policy allowing passengers to carry small knives and sports equipment like souvenir baseball bats and golf clubs onto planes.

3. Council Approves City Tax Collections By Trustee -

The Shelby County Trustee’s office will collect property taxes for the city of Memphis under an interlocal agreement approved Tuesday, Dec. 18, by the Memphis City Council.

The agreement negotiated between Trustee David Lenoir and Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. comes after several decades of attempts on both sides of the city-county governments divide at such an arrangement.

4. Counterfeit Air Bags Called ‘Extreme Safety Risk’ -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Thousands of motorists may be driving cars and trucks installed with dangerous counterfeit bags and they should have them replaced at their own expense, the Obama administration warned Wednesday.

5. City Leaders Look to New Governing Plan -

When 10 of the 13 Memphis City Council members get together around a table it is usually in their committee room on the fifth floor of City Hall for their regular meetings.

But last week they gathered in Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s seventh-floor conference room at his request.

6. Citizens Express Budget Concerns -

Memphis City Council members heard from and saw a lot of opponents of plans to close five Memphis public libraries Tuesday, May 22, during an hour and a half of comments from the public.

“I was going to suggest instead of cutting libraries that you improve them,” said Kaye Veazey.

7. McFarland Named VP At Visible Music College -

Christy McFarland has been named the vice president of business at Visible Music College. Previously the director of marketing, McFarland will now oversee VMC’s marketing/public relations, business and operational functions.

8. In the Balance -

Memphis City Council members hope to wrap up budget committee hearings Tuesday, May 22, including a public comment period Tuesday evening at City Hall.

But with a third and final reading on budget and tax rate ordinances scheduled for the group’s first meeting in June, the council lacks a master plan for reworking the Wharton administration’s $628.3 million budget proposal.

9. Kustoff Elected to BankTennessee Board -

David Kustoff, the former U.S. attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, has been elected to the BankTennessee board of directors.

10. Wharton, Fullilove & Conrad Re-Elected -- Harris-Ford to Runoff - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton Jr. won a full four-year term of office as mayor Thursday, Oct. 6, two years after he claimed the mayor’s office in a special election.

And all 12 of the Memphis City Council members seeking re-election won new four year terms in the city election cycle, marking the largest return of incumbents to the 13-member council in the 43-year history of the mayor-council form of government.

11. Allie Prescott to Head U of M Alumni Association -

Allie Prescott has been elected president of the University of Memphis Alumni Association national executive board of directors.

Prescott holds his bachelor’s and law degrees from the U of M, and he is a life member of the University of Memphis Alumni Association. As a former adviser to the executive director and former vice president for membership, Prescott is serving his fifth year on the national board.

12. 4 Council Members - All 3 City Court Judges To Run Unopposed In Oct. Elections -

Four incumbent Memphis City Council members and all three incumbent City Court Judges were effectively re-elected at the Thursday, July 21, noon deadline for candidates to file their qualifying petitions for the Oct. 6 Memphis ballot.

13. LaHood: More Info Needed on Distracted Driving -

U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood applauded car companies Thursday for beginning to fight an "epidemic" of distracted driving and said he's waiting for a study on the problem before discussing whether the government should regulate communications technology built directly into vehicles.

15. Council Wants Mediation of MCS Funding Dispute -

Mediation is the latest direction in a complex school funding morass that is getting more complex by the day.

Memphis City Council members Tuesday voted to have their attorney file a motion in Chancery Court seeking non-binding mediation on how and how much the city should pay the Memphis City Schools (MCS) system in a two-year funding dispute.

18. More Kids Trapped in Sweltering Cars Are Dying -

WASHINGTON (AP) — Temperatures are rising and so are reports of infants and toddlers dying from being trapped inside sizzling automobiles.

A researcher says 18 children have died of hyperthermia since the beginning of the year, with eight deaths reported since June 13. That's the largest number of fatalities through the first half of a year since Jan Null, an adjunct professor of meteorology at San Francisco State University, began tracking the data in the late 1990s.

19. Appeals Court Ruling Raises More School Funding Issues -

In the 19 months since the Memphis City Council voted to cut funding to the Memphis public school system, much has changed beyond the borders of the legal issue it raised and the lawsuit it prompted.

20. Tn Appeals Court Rules MCS Owed $50 Million By City -

The Tennessee Court of Appeals has ruled the city of Memphis owes the Memphis school system $50 million in funding by the end of June.

The ruling filed today in Jackson, Tenn. affirms an earlier decision by Chancellor Kenny Armstrong and is likely to be appealed to the Tennessee Supreme Court or the city could ask the Appeals Court to take a second look at its decision.

21. UPDATE: Appeals Court Backs MCS In Funding Lawsuit -

23. Married Attorneys: Working Together A Bonus for Clients -

In the Memphis legal community, it’s not hard to find two attorneys who are married to each other. Constantly meeting new people is one of the most basic components of their jobs.

But finding married couples who practice law at the same firm is not as common. As the Memphis Bar Association reports, “very few” attorney spouses work together. The association doesn’t keep specific numbers on that.

24. RISE Foundation Names Board Members -

The RISE Foundation has named its 2008-2009 board of directors.

The members are Jay Healy, board chair; Beverly Robertson, vice chair; Marianne Parrs, treasurer and chair of the Finance Committee; Chuck Schadt, secretary; Tomeka Hart, community initiatives chair; Scott Cromie, new markets chair; and David Waddell, board development chair.

25. Kustoff Resigns District Atty. Post -

U.S. Attorney David Kustoff is leaving his job as chief federal prosecutor for West Tennesseee.

Kustoff announced his resignation Tuesday effective May 16, just over two years after he was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the U.S. Senate.

30. Kustoff Puts Leadership Skills to the Test As Lead Prosecutor for West Tennessee -

David F. Kustoff, the recently appointed U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Tennessee, is settling in after almost a week on the job. President George W. Bush nominated Kustoff in February and the U.S. Senate confirmed him in mid-March to replace Terry Harris, who recently accepted a position as vice president for security for FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. As such, Harris is responsible for security operations throughout the company's global network.
