Vernetta Eddleman has joined the Family Safety Center, Memphis and Shelby County’s center for victims of domestic violence, as director of client services.

In her new role, Eddleman will be responsible for the planning, design, development and management of client services, and will also supervise and train staff and partner agency providers in delivering quality care to victims and their families.

4. As US Economy Steadies, Bank Closings Become Rarer -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Fewer U.S. banks are failing than at any time since the financial crisis erupted in 2008. The healthier banking industry is helping sustain an economy slowed by lackluster hiring, weak manufacturing and Europe's debt crisis.

5. Executive Coach Burtch Earns Int’l Designation -

Bill Burtch, founder and president of full-service management consultancy firm Harmony Coaching & Consulting, has received the Professional Certified Coach designation from the International Coach Federation, becoming the second PCC in Memphis. Burtch, who also holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources designation, focuses his consulting work in executive/team coaching, professional development training and human resources consulting.

CYNTHIANA, Ky. (AP) - After years of faithfully supplying leaf to tobacco giant Philip Morris International, farmer Jess Burrier received a postcard, thanking him for his contributions and telling him his service wasn't needed this year.

8. AIG Sells Alico Unit to MetLife for $15.5 Billion -

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (AP) - American International Group Inc. said Monday it will sell its American Life Insurance Co. division for $15.5 billion to MetLife Inc. The government-approved deal, AIG's second big asset sale in two weeks, will give the insurer more cash to repay the billions of bailout dollars it still owes the government.

9. U of M Appoints Meredith Director of Admissions -

Dr. Todd Preston has joined the University of Tennessee Health Science Center’s Department of Otolaryngology as a specialist in head and neck cancer and reconstructive surgery. He also has been named assistant professor at UTHSC. Preston comes from the University of Iowa, where he completed his residency in head and neck surgery and was a clinical instructor.
