NEW ORLEANS (AP) – Inspectors taking the first-ever inventory of flood control systems overseen by the federal government have found hundreds of structures at risk of failing and endangering people and property in 37 states.

5. Memphis Invest Spent $3.1 Million In Redevelopment -

Memphis Invest, a single-family rental real estate investment services firm, sold 164 homes during the third quarter and spent $3.1 million with 58 local small businesses completing redevelopment of those properties. Those companies collectively employ approximately 250 workers.

HOUSTON (AP) — Two psychiatrists testified Thursday that former Texas billionaire and financier R. Allen Stanford, who is set to go to trial at the end of the month on charges he bilked investors out of $7 billion in a Ponzi scheme, is not mentally competent to go forward with his case.

Like many projects companies launched before the recession hit, the plan for rejuvenating the 432-unit Bella Vista Apartment Homes in Hickory Hill began with such promise.

In March 2007, a newly formed company, Maple Creek Advisors LLC of Dallas, made its first multifamily acquisition with plans to invest $4 million of renovations in the property.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The deepening recession spells trouble for a little-known government corporation that insures the pensions of 44 million workers and retirees.

The Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. already has an $11 billion deficit that seems sure to grow larger as Corporate America suffers through the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression.

22. Mid-America Establishes $500 Million Acquisition Fund -

Memphis-based Mid-America Apartment Communities Inc. has announced plans to ramp up its multifamily investments through a newly established fund called Mid-America Multifamily Fund I LLC.

The fund, a joint venture between Mid-America and institutional capital, will target investment opportunities within the company's existing Sunbelt markets. Mid-America will own a 33 percent interest in the fund with plans to acquire $500 million of multifamily properties during the next three years.
