1. Espitia Joins Michael Hatcher as Chief Financial Officer -

Ed Espitia has joined Michael Hatcher & Associates Inc. as chief financial officer. Espitia comes to the Memphis-based landscape services firm after serving since 2010 as finance manager for Schulz Xtruded Products, a Germany-based pipe maker with operations in North Mississippi.

2. Car Company's Tunica Plans Haven't Come to Fruition -

TUNICA, Miss. (AP) – It seemed like a win for everyone involved when a startup car company, backed by political heavyweights, wooed investors with plans to build a massive auto plant in the Mississippi Delta, hire thousands of people and pump out a brand new line of fuel-efficient vehicles.

3. Neal Joins Madison Line Records as Chief Operating Officer -

Antonio Neal has joined Madison Line Records, the record label affiliated with Visible Music College, as chief operating officer. Neal – a four-time Gospel Music Association Dove Award winner who has also been nominated for a Grammy Award and four Stellar Gospel Music Awards – will oversee marketing, publishing and day-to-day operations at the label.

4. Day of Answers -

Polls open across Shelby County at 7 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, in elections that already promise to be memorable for problems during the early voting period as well as the mixture of issues and one-of-a-kind contests on the ballot.

5. Baker Donelson Elects New Shareholders -

Four attorneys in the Memphis office of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC have been elected shareholders.

They are Adam Baldridge, Christopher Coats, Richard Mattern and Stacie Smith Winkler.

6. Deadline Looms for Complex Aug. Elections -

The August elections were already going to be more complex than usual. There are the changes from this year’s drawing of new district lines for the Tennessee Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives.

7. Candidates Begin Pulling Petitions -

As early voting in advance of the March 6 primary Election Day begins Wednesday, Feb. 15, candidates are already considering races on the August ballot.

And at least one of the potential candidates just finished one political conquest.

8. Mergers Latest in Baker Donelson Expansion Plans -

Since June 2003, the Memphis-based law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC has grown from 270 lawyers and public policy advisers to 625.

Between October and November of this year, the firm also branched out into two new states, merging with firms in Texas and Florida.

9. Baker Donelson Expands with Fla. Firm Merger -

The Memphis-based law firm of Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC has merged with the Orlando, Fla., law firm of Litchford & Christopher Professional Association.

Baker Donelson gains six attorneys through the merger.

10. Heart of Memphis -

The day before Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam was the keynote speaker this summer at the Downtown Memphis Commission’s 2011 Annual Luncheon, he went for a jog in Nashville wearing his “Believe Memphis” Grizzlies T-shirt.

13. Rosa Becomes GM at Holiday Inn-Wolfchase -

Chris Rosa has been named general manger of the Holiday Inn and Suites Memphis-Wolfchase. Rosa will be responsible for day-to-day operations of the property. He previously served as vice president of operations for Equity Estates, general manger at the Sheraton Meadowlands and area manger of the Crowne Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta. Rosa also has been named General Manager of the Year by Patriot American Hotels and Hotelier of the Year by the Connecticut Hospitality Association.

14. Rainey Chosen as President-Elect Of TN Women's Council of Realtors -

Crye-Leike Realtors broker Patty Rainey has been chosen as president-elect of the Tennessee Women's Council of Realtors.

Rainey is a member of the Memphis Area, Northwest Mississippi, Tennessee and National Associations of Realtors. She is in the Multi-Million Dollar Club and MAARket Master Toastmasters, and in 2006, she served as the president of the local Certified Residential Specialists chapter.

15. Memphis Heart Clinic Promotes Shirwany to Cardiovascular Practice -

Memphis Heart Clinic recently appointed Dr. Arsalan Shirwany to its cardiovascular practice. Shirwany is board certified in cardiology, echocardiology and internal medicine. He has served as chief fellow during his cardiology fellowship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). Previously, Shirwany was a staff physician with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center at Memphis and an assistant professor of medicine at UTHSC.

16. Gerard Appointed to Statewide Post -

Dr. Dava F. Gerard, a certified physician executive and administrator at the Methodist Healthcare Cancer Center, has been appointed West Tennessee Chair for the State of Tennessee Comprehensive Cancer Control Plan. Gerard also was appointed to Tennessee's Office of Cancer Surveillance.

By his own admission, attorney Kevin Snider is not a big proponent of class action lawsuits, because they typically do not provide good relief for plaintiffs.

"The majority of the time, the attorneys are the ones who make the vast amount of money in class action lawsuits," said Snider, founding attorney of Snider Horner & New PLLC in Germantown.

19. U of M Moot Court Team Earns Spot in National Finals -

H. McCall Wilson Jr., president and CEO of The Bank of Fayette County, recently attended a meeting of the American Bankers Association's Community Bankers Council in Washington, D.C. Wilson represents Tennessee's community banks on the council.
