5. Harris Joins Transnetyx as VP of Sales -

Michael Harris has joined Transnetyx, a genetic diagnostics company, as vice president of sales for the company’s pharmacogenomics division.

6. UTHSC College of Medicine Names Smith Interim Dean -

J. Lacey Smith has been named interim dean for the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.

Smith currently serves as the associate dean of clinical affairs for the College of Medicine and the chief medical officer and executive vice president for UT Medical Group Inc.

CHICAGO (AP) - It was September 1985 when a 24-year-old Brian Dunn knotted his skinny leather tie and set off to began a job as a sales clerk inside a small electronics store in Minnetonka, Minn., named Best Buy.

8. Best Buy Taps President and COO Dunn as New CEO -

CHICAGO (AP) - Best Buy Co. Inc. laid out a succession plan Wednesday, saying Brian J. Dunn, its president and chief operating officer, will take over this summer as chief executive of the nation's largest consumer electronics chain.

9. Stores Using Survival Tactics, Look Past Holidays -

NEW YORK (AP) - Retailers are accelerating their use of survival tactics – slashing prices further and pulling merchandise off shelves to send to liquidators – as the number of holiday shopping days dwindles. But January and beyond look scarier for even relatively healthy merchants as the passing of the holidays give shoppers no reason at all to spend.

10. Best Buy Q3 Profit Sinks, Offers Staff Buyouts -

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Best Buy Co. Inc. , the nation's biggest consumer electronics retailer, said Tuesday that its third-quarter profit sank 77 percent as it faced dramatic changes in consumer spending.

11. Carmony Named Newcomer of the Year -

Brad Carmony has been named Newcomer of the Year in the 2006 MPACT Maker Awards. The award recognizes individuals who have lived in Memphis for a short time, but who have made significant contributions to the community. Carmony is the public relations manager at inferno. He also serves on the regional advisory board of the Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Association of Tennessee, the Exchange Club Family Center's Gala Committee and as a member of the Shelby County Humane Society's Pet Set organization.

12. Memphis Area Legal Services Board Elects Matthews as VP -

The Memphis Area Legal Services' board of directors has elected Antonio "Toney" Matthews to serve as its vice president. Matthews is an attorney with Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz PC and is a member of the Defense Research Institute, the Tennessee Defense Lawyers Association and the Tennessee Board of Professional Responsibility Hearing Committee.
