1. Alexander Touts Importance of Political Role Models -

Among the crowd of 500 who gathered Monday, April 21, for the 11th annual Dunavant Public Servant Awards were fourth- and fifth-graders from White Station Elementary School.

Although they were by a wall on the far side of the ballroom at the Holiday Inn University of Memphis, they drew the attention of U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, the keynote speaker for the Rotary Club of Memphis East event sponsored by The Daily News and the University of Memphis.

2. CB Richard Ellis Brokers Four Multifamily Sales -

The multifamily group at CB Richard Ellis Memphis has closed on the sale of four properties in the Memphis market over the last several weeks.

Briar Club Apartments, a 272-unit apartment community constructed in 1985, sold for $8.7 million, or $32,093 per unit. Cinnamon Trails Apartments, a 208-unit apartment community constructed in 1989, sold for $8.6 million, or $41,461 per unit. respectively. CBRE Memphis represented the sellers, Briar Apartments LLC and Cinnamon Apartments LLC in the sale to New York based Briar Club LLC and Cinnamon Trail LLC.

4. Neal Joins Madison Line Records as Chief Operating Officer -

Antonio Neal has joined Madison Line Records, the record label affiliated with Visible Music College, as chief operating officer. Neal – a four-time Gospel Music Association Dove Award winner who has also been nominated for a Grammy Award and four Stellar Gospel Music Awards – will oversee marketing, publishing and day-to-day operations at the label.

A unique faith-based partnership between Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare and more than 500 of the area’s churches has been lauded nationally by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services as a model for addressing health care disparities and preventing and managing chronic diseases.

6. Victory Packaging Relocates to Memphis -

Victory Packaging soon will relocate its entire Southaven branch operation to the Southeast Memphis industrial submarket.

The Houston, Texas-based industrial packaging supplier and distributor inked 158,333 square feet in Shelby Air Park Building 1, 4500 Malone Road. The 475,000-square-foot building also houses Terminal Warehouse Inc.

At the Memphis Bar Association’s Annual Meeting Thursday at The Peabody hotel, the MBA announced its 2010 officers and new members of its board of directors.

Immediate past president Art Quinn passed the gavel to incoming president Ricky E. Wilkins of the Law Offices of Ricky E. Wilkins. John Cannon of Shuttleworth Williams PLLC and Gary K. Smith of Apperson Crump & Maxwell PLC automatically move to the positions of vice president/president-elect and treasurer, respectively. Linda Warren Seely, director of pro bono projects at Memphis Area Legal Services Inc., was chosen as secretary.

Unless you know them personally, you’ve probably never heard of most of the candidates running in the Oct. 15 special election for Memphis mayor.

Most of the 25 people show no visible signs of running any kind of campaign.

16. U of M’s Preza Receives $740K Award for Research -

Dr. Chrysanthe Preza has received a more than $740,000 National Science Foundation Faculty Early Career Development Award for her research to improve live cell imaging. Preza is an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Memphis’ Herff College of Engineering.

18. Ranta Elected Treasurer Of Southern Arts Federation -

Frederick W. Smith, founder of FedEx, has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Memphis. Smith is chairman, president and chief executive officer of FedEx Corp. He oversees the company’s branches, including FedEx Services, FedEx Express, FedEx Freight and FedEx Office. Smith has served on the boards of several companies, including St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Mayo Foundation. He is a member of the Business Roundtable and co-chairman of the Energy Security Leadership Council.

24. FBI Special Agent Harrison Named PRSA Communicator of the Year -

My Harrison has been named the 2006 PRSA Communicator of the Year by the Memphis chapter of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). She is a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in charge of the Memphis field office. Since her arrival in Memphis two years ago, she has supervised a number of high-profile federal investigations, including "Operation Tennessee Waltz," "Operation Tarnished Blue" and "Operation Main Street Sweeper."

The YMCA metropolitan board of directors named Keith G. Johnson CEO of YMCA of the Memphis & the Mid-South. Johnson is a 27-year YMCA veteran who has served in various positions in Atlanta, Fort Worth and New Orleans. His earliest position with YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South was as vice president and executive director of the Fogelman Downtown YMCA. He graduated from Georgia State University.
