1. Harris Files Ford Challenge at Deadline -

Memphis City Council member Lee Harris is challenging Democratic state Sen. Ophelia Ford in the August primary for District 29, the Senate seat held by a member of the Ford family since 1975.

2. May County Primary Ballot Set -

The ballot for the May Shelby County primary elections was completed Wednesday, March 5, as the Shelby County Election Commission disqualified a County Commission candidate whose attorney argued that she intended to but never did live in the district she hoped to represent.

3. FBI Questions Surprise Local Politicos -

As harsh as the criticism has been of the way the Shelby County Election Commission conducted elections in 2012, no one, including those who filed two Chancery Court lawsuits over the results, have said or presented proof it was intentional.

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — People receiving welfare or unemployment benefits in Mississippi should be subject to random drug testing, said Billy Hewes, a Republican state senator who's running for lieutenant governor.

9. MED Task Force Members Appointed -

Shelby County Interim Mayor Joyce Avery and County Commissioner Joe Ford, who will become county mayor Dec. 10, have appointed a task force to brainstorm short- and long-term solutions to the revenue crisis at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.

10. Stimulus to Relieve MED Money Woes -

The Regional Medical Center at Memphis, which laid off 88 employees this week, apparently won’t have to shut its doors later this year because federal stimulus money will offset some state funding cutbacks.

11. County Commission To Vote on Appointments -

The Shelby County Board of Commissioners is expected today to approve several appointments to boards and commissions.

Among the approvals that are expected are Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr.’s nomination of Tracy R. Chism for appointment to the Shelby County Health, Education and Housing Facility Board. Also on the slate are Wharton’s nominations of Anthony Tate and Lee Askew III for appointment to the Shelby County Healthcare Corp. and Michael Adrian Davis and Marc E. Willis for appointment to the Memphis and Shelby County Music Commission.
