There is no reliable way to determine if a losing football program is on the precipice of becoming a winning football program. If there was, we’d all be getting rich betting the games.
But there is something to be said about change starting at the top. Second-year University of Memphis coach Justin Fuente and several players – all members of the team’s Leadership Council – met with the media on Wednesday, Aug. 7, the official reporting date; the first of four helmet-and-shorts practices was to begin the next day, and then on Tuesday, Aug. 13, the first practice in full pads.
3. Memphis Music Foundation Elects Bell Chairman

Al Bell has been elected the new chairman of the Memphis Music Foundation.
Under Bell’s direction, the foundation will continue to provide education, strategic planning and promotional opportunities to the Memphis music industry.
Bell is the former chairman and owner of Stax Records and former president of Motown Records. Bell has worked with artists such as Booker T and the MG’s, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, Albert King, Rufus Thomas, Isaac Hayes and Richard Pryor.

Fans rushed to Memphis music stores and snatched Michael Jackson recordings from the shelves as soon as news broke of his death Thursday, buying out the inventories of Poplar Tunes and Spin Street within a couple of hours.
5. Former Mayor Hackett Tapped For CEO Post at Children's Museum

Richard C. "Dick" Hackett has been named chief executive officer (CEO) of the Children's Museum of Memphis. Hackett officially will take office July 17. Hackett served as mayor of Memphis from 1982 to 1992. He also served as senior vice president at ALSAC, the fundraising arm of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, for nine years after his mayoral term.
