22. Tech Companies Team Up to Combat Email Scams -

NEW YORK (AP) – Google, Facebook and other big tech companies are jointly designing a system for combating email scams known as phishing.

Such scams try to trick people into giving away passwords and other personal information by sending emails that look as if they come from a legitimate bank, retailer or other business. When Bank of America customers see emails that appear to come from the bank, they might click on a link that takes them to a fake site mimicking the real Bank of America's. There, they might enter personal details, which scam artists can capture and use for fraud.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward from Decatur, Ga., has been ranked as the best prospect from Georgia and anywhere from the 19th prospect nationally by ESPNU to 26th best by Yahoo!/Rivals.com. He joins AAU Atlanta Celtics teammate Damien Wilson in signing with the Tigers.

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (AP) – Yahoo is joining the computer tablet bandwagon with a digital magazine designed for the iPad.

The magazine software unveiled Wednesday is called Livestand. It can be customized to pull content from Yahoo's website and other participating publishers to cater to each user's interest.

To quote The Beatles, “I read the news today, oh boy…” The jobless rate is up to 9.8 percent. I hadn’t planned to write a column about the holiday season, but here it is.

I recently attended a meeting of a Memphis Area Career Transition Group. There are a number of these in the city, comprised of volunteer facilitators, people looking for jobs and some employed people who attend out of gratitude to offer moral support. The meetings are upbeat and full of resources such as resume services, cover letter coaching and, most important, positive attitudes.

NEW YORK (AP) – More top corporate executives expect to hire workers and boost spending on their companies over the next six months.

A survey released Tuesday by Business Roundtable, an association of CEOs of big U.S. companies, shows 45 percent of executives say they expect their companies to add more workers.

Hey, pal, when was the last time you wore a tie to eat at a restaurant? A suit? A jacket? Consented to take off your baseball cap?

Not that men are required to look like Don Draper when dining out nor women to wear cocktail dresses, but things have changed radically in the realms of fine dining, and indeed, any kind of dining, over the past 20 or 30 years, coincident with a great sea-change in American culture.

It’s Facebook Free Friday, a day of social networking protest over the sharing of personal data and the changing terms of privacy.

On the eve of the protest, which includes a Facebook site, Mark Zuckerberg, founder and chief executive of Facebook, was rolling out new features on the social networking site designed to answer the privacy concerns that have spawned the protest.

63. Market Gains Set Up CEO Pay Bonanza -

NEW YORK (AP) — America's top CEOs are set for a once-in-a-lifetime pay bonanza.

Most of them got their annual stock compensation early last year when the stock market was at a 12-year low. And companies doled out more stock and options than usual because grants from the previous year had fallen so much in value that many people thought they'd never be worth anything.

A man charged in East Tennessee with hacking Sarah Palin’s e-mail during the 2008 presidential campaign has a court hearing less than a week ahead of his trial, where Palin plans to testify.

David Kernell’s attorney has numerous motions pending at the final pre-trial hearing Thursday before U.S. District Judge Thomas Phillips in Knoxville.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Twitter announced Tuesday that it is introducing advertising by allowing companies to pay to have their messages show up first in searches on its site.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - The Memphis Grizzlies have announced an enhancement to TV game broadcasts to give viewers a feeling of being in the arena.
