JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – The state of Mississippi is proposing to give $12 million to Middleby Corp., the owner of Greenwood's Viking Range, to help pay for an expansion.

(AP) — White House business officials have told a gathering in Oxford that the latest package of small business incentives calls for accelerating federal payments to government contractors, streamlining paperwork and making it easier for small firms to get access to loans and tax credits.

So far this year, FedExFamilyHouse has served as a home away from home for more than 800 families whose children have received treatment at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

Last year, the facility at 918 Poplar Ave. – located a short walking distance from the hospital – brought comfort to more than 4,000 individuals, including pediatric patients and their parents, grandparents and siblings.

When the restaurant Wally Joe closed in January 2007, owner Fred Carl Jr., founder, president and CEO of Viking Range Corp., decided to keep a restaurant going while looking for a buyer for the space in the shopping center at South Mendenhall Road and Sanderlin Avenue. Appropriately, the temporary restaurant would be called Interim.

Interim Restaurant opens today in the space formerly occupied by Wally Joe, the upscale restaurant at 5040 Sanderlin Ave. Earlier this month, Fred Carl Jr., founder and CEO of Viking Range Corp. and owner of the new restaurant, announced that Chef Wally Joe had left to pursue other interests. Carl plans to operate the restaurant on an interim basis while looking for a buyer for the space. For reservations, call 818-0821.

17. Viking Embarks on New Voyage With Name Change, Relocation -

Cooking up plans for Friday night? Date night at the newly opened Viking Cooking School in East Memphis could get the evening sizzling.

Among other classes this week, the school will hold "Date Night: In Sicily" Friday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to teach Italian cooking. Date nights typically are themed according to different types of food. (See the box at the end of the story for more.)
