The Philadelphia-based retailer fills part of the space formerly occupied by Gap, in between the new Brighton Collectibles and Anthropologie. The location marks Free People’s second boutique in Tennessee, after a location in Nashville.

The location marks the Philadelphia-based retailer’s second boutique in Tennessee, after a location in Nashville. The 2,000-square-foot space will feature a “Blacksmith Cottage” concept, the brand’s second store with this design, and the first of its kind in the U.S.

7. AA Concepts Files Permit Next to Urban Outfitters -

Houston-based retailer AA Concepts Inc. will soon fill the space to the east of Urban Outfitters Inc. at the gateway to the Cooper-Young community in Midtown.

8. Cooper-Young Growth -

When Bert Smythe decided to launch new restaurant concept Alchemy last summer in the Cooper-Young district, the 5,200-square-foot space formerly occupied by Grace and Au Fond Farmtable seemed about 25 percent larger than was needed.

9. Prolonged Recession -

In the words of Phil Woodard, an owner of multiple residential and commercial properties in Downtown Memphis, breaking even is the new profit.

Or as national real estate expert Jonathan Miller said earlier this month at the Urban Land Institute’s Real Estate Outlook for the Mid-South, “We cannot expect to make money the way we did a few years ago.”

10. Restaurants, Retail Enter Memphis Market -

It’s perhaps the most cliché phrase in the real estate business: location, location, location.

So far in 2011, Memphis has seen a plethora of household names enter the market – Chipotle, Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Urban Outfitters and Staples Inc., among others. And by the close of the year, the perfect location is a critical contingency that even more nationally recognized brands are hoping to have settled.

11. Retail Slide Sends Broad Stock Market Lower -

NEW YORK (AP) — Signs that U.S. consumer demand may be weakening led to a broad sell-off in stocks Friday, setting the market on course for its third week of losses.

Retailers Gap Inc. and Aeropostale each lost more than 15 percent after cutting their profit forecasts for the year, in part because of higher costs for raw materials. Gap's sales have been sluggish, a worrying sign for investors who are counting on shoppers to lead a recovery in consumer spending.

12. Midtown Changer -

By the end of 2011, Bardog Tavern owner Aldo DeMartino will have two new Memphis restaurant concepts up and running.

First, The Slider Inn, 2117 Peabody Ave., will fill the 1,200-square-foot space formerly occupied by Bluff City Bayou. The owners, Les Carloss and Jeff Corrigan, moved from the Edge District to the Midtown spot in 2009 and closed it shortly after to pursue catering endeavors.

13. Brand Strategy -

It was two years ago at a Five Guys Burgers and Fries franchisee conference when license rights to Memphis were up for grabs.

Mark Moseley, director of franchising for the Lorton, Va.-based burger chain and friend of FedEx Corp. founder Fred Smith, approached Alabama franchisee Seth Hargett about putting together a package and asked him if he wanted Memphis.

14. Antiques Survival -

Along with real estate and home building, retailers who cater to the housing sector have taken a hard hit in the past two years.

But some Memphis-area antiques businesses, especially ones that appeal to a wide range of buyers and work hard to drive them through the doors, have managed to pull an upswing out of a down market.

15. Circa Slated for Regalia Space -

Circa by John Bragg restaurant plans to open its East Memphis location at Regalia shopping center, Boyle Investment Co. recently announced.

16. Saddle Creek Lands High-End Women’s Clothing Store -

Anthropologie, a high-end retailer of apparel and other items, is coming to The Shops of Saddle Creek in Germantown.

Though a lease hadn’t been inked by press time Monday, the company will soon begin tenant improvements for the bays that housed the former Yia Yia’s Euro Café and Divine Rags on the southwest end of Saddle Creek North.

17. Sector Snap: Specialty Apparel -

NEW YORK (AP) - Shares of specialty apparel retailers were mixed Monday, ahead of several fiscal third-quarter earnings reports.

After many retailers reported dismal October sales in stores open at least on year, a key retail metric known as same-store sales, last week, analysts are pessimistic about third-quarter results. However, shares are down so much over the past several months, few expect retailers' stocks to fall a significant amount further.
