WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. consumer spending surged in May with the biggest monthly increase in nearly six years – a sign of stronger economic growth ahead.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that consumer spending rose 0.9 percent last month, up from a revised 0.1 percent increase in April. May spending registered the biggest gain since August 2009, when the government's "Cash for Clunkers" program fueled auto-buying.

The Federal Reserve said Thursday that the value of Americans' stock holdings, real estate and other assets rose to $84.9 trillion from $83.3 trillion in the final three months of last year. Stock portfolios rose $487 billion, home values by $503 billion.

AutoZone Inc.

AutoZone Inc. is one of the largest auto parts retailers and distributors in the U.S., with a store count of 5,476 as of Feb. 14. Since 1998, the company has repurchased $15.7 billion worth of its own shares. At the end of March, AutoZone continued its share buyback program with the authorization to buy back another $750 million in company stock. 39. US Home Sales Slide in April Amid Listing Shortage -

WASHINGTON (AP) – Sales of existing U.S. homes slipped in April due mainly to relatively few listings and rising prices, providing evidence of the housing sector's uneven recovery.

The National Association of Realtors said Thursday that sales of existing homes fell 3.3 percent to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.04 million. April marked the second straight month of the sales rate topping 5 million homes. Purchases have recovered from a disappointing 2014 because strong job growth and low mortgage rates have generated more would-be buyers.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The poshest of luxury homes are acquiring the cachet of a masterwork by Picasso or Matisse.

Rather than settle for garages of antique cars or a museum's worth of paintings, billionaires are increasingly willing to pay $100 million for homes that can serve as showcases for their fortunes, according to an analysis issued Thursday by Christie's International Real Estate.

52. Shelby County Commercial Sales Revenue Surges in First Quarter -

The number of commercial sales in Shelby County dipped in the first quarter when compared to last year but the average sale amount and total sales revenue surged ahead of 2014 levels, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports.

53. US Home Prices Accelerated in February as Sales Rise -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. home prices climbed at a faster pace in February than the previous month, driven by higher sales and a limited supply of available houses.

The Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller 20-city home price index rose 5 percent in February from 12 months earlier, S&P said Tuesday. That is up from a 4.5 percent pace in January.

54. Will McGhee Tyson Expansion Lure Southwest? -

With some of the preliminary work out of the way, the ambitious airfield reconstruction project at Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport could begin in earnest as early as August.

57. US New Home Sales Collapse in March, Falling 11.4 Percent -

Sales of new U.S. homes plummeted in March, as the spring buying season opened with sharp declines in the Northeast and South.

The Commerce Department said Thursday that new-home sales fell 11.4 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 481,000. This marks a swift reversal from an annual sales pace of 543,000 in February, which had been the strongest performance in seven years.

59. US Home Sales Bounced Back in March, But Can the Gain Last? -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. home sales bloomed in March after a brutal winter, a sign of possible newfound momentum for housing.

Sales of existing homes jumped 6.1 percent last month to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.19 million, the National Association of Realtors said Wednesday. The gains were solid enough to suggest that housing might be returning to stable footing after enduring a boom, a bust and a stubbornly tepid recovery over the past dozen years.

60. Office, Industrial Real Estate Rebounds in First Quarter -

In a sure sign that the local economy is in rebound mode, the Memphis-area commercial real estate market is heating up with the industrial and office sectors producing strong gains.

Fueled by strong demand and tightening of available space, rental rates for Class A space in East Memphis, the city’s primary business district, are approaching pre-recession levels, according to a new report.

64. GE Pares Off Financial Unit and Returns to Industrial Roots -

General Electric is leaving the lending business, a major source of both profit and risk, as it continues to whittle its focus down to an industrial core.

The company said Friday that it will sell most of its GE Capital assets over the next two years, shedding businesses in a sector where it has had a tough time generating acceptable returns. GE also plans to repurchase as much as $50 billion of its own stock.

67. Steady as She Goes: New Home Market Stays Stable -

New home construction in Shelby County, as tracked by permits, jumped in February when compared to February 2014 while the number of new home sales remained flat.

Builders filed 88 permits in February, up 22 percent from 72 permits filed in February 2014, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com. The permits filed in February averaged 2,840 square feet and $188,729, compared to 3,252 square feet and $241,788 in February 2014.

68. US Service Firms Grew at Slightly Slower Pace Last Month -

WASHINGTON (AP) – U.S. service firms expanded at a slightly slower yet still healthy pace in March, an encouraging sign after multiple reports last week pointed to a slowing economy.

The Institute for Supply Management said Monday that its services index slipped to 56.5 last month, from 56.9 in February. Any reading over 50 indicates expansion.

Every so often, members of the Tennessee General Assembly attempt to amend the Professional Privilege Tax, a tax levied for having a license to operate a myriad of occupations.

Accountants, engineers, architects, real estate agents and others are subject to the tax. Recently, lawmakers wanted to extend the $400 tax to all real estate agents, no matter if they’re a broker or an associate broker.

70. $30 Million Apartment Community to Rise Near Lakeland -

A $30 million multifamily community is beginning to take shape on the east side of Houston Levee Road just south of U.S. 64 in Memphis.

Developed by WessCorp Communities, the Charleston Place apartments will house 284 units and is the first new multifamily project in that area in a decade. The Memphis office of Financial Federal Bank has arranged the $30 million construction financing of Charleston Place.

An Arizona-based real estate investment trust has a purchased a Texas Roadhouse restaurant for $2.8 million.

Spirit Master Funding II LLC, an affiliate of Phoenix-based Spirit Capital Realty, acquired the restaurant property at 2810 New Brunswick Road from Spirit Master Funding LX LLC, according to a Feb. 26 warranty deed.

The national outlook for traditional enclosed malls is bleak. No new enclosed mall has been built in the U.S. since 2006.
