A longtime third-party logistics company is on the move.

Pathmark Transportation Co., which was started in 1984 as a subsidiary of petroleum marketing company Pathmark International before becoming a national logistics provider, has signed a new lease for 3,800 square feet at the i-bank Tower on Poplar Avenue in East Memphis.

A Nashville-based law firm is moving into permanent space at the Renaissance Center office building.

Waller Lansden Dortch and Davis LLP, which opened a Memphis office in February, has leased 10,000 square feet in the East Memphis office building at 1715 Aaron Brenner Drive.

7. Creatives Talking -

Memphis is experiencing a creative resurgence. And Billy Nation and Andrew Lebowitz, two friends who work at the marketing communications firm Oden, want to talk about it.

Back in April, they started the “Creative Memphis Podcast,” a roughly hour-long chat they co-host that features a conversation with a guest who does creative work in some form or fashion. They envisioned the project as a kind of megaphone to support and celebrate creatives in Memphis, as well as the resurgence of positive energy and feeling they feel is spreading around the city.

Ellen Abisch has joined Health Choice LLC as senior director of population health services. In the newly created position, Abisch will be responsible for designing, implementing and managing population health and wellness programs for the Health Choice network.
Prior to joining the physician hospital organization, she served as manager of benefits and wellness for ServiceMaster.

10. Ashlar Hall Owner Hopeful for Building’s Rehab -

The owner of Ashlar Hall says he would like to pursue renovation of the Midtown mansion and hopes he can find multiple tenants to fill the rehabilitated building, which would help offset the cost of repairs.

11. Comic Convention Drops Ashlar Hall Plans -

The Memphis Comic and Fantasy Convention says it no longer wants to be part of Ashlar Hall’s future under terms proposed by the building’s current owner.

Joe Thordarson, founder of the fantasy convention, said disagreements over how much Ashlar Hall’s current owner, Kenny Medlin, wanted to charge in rent led him to withdraw from the process.

For months, commercial real estate brokers have been watching closely for any signs that might hint at what FedEx Corp. and its subsidiaries will do with the hundreds of thousands of square feet of commercial space the Memphis-based company leases across the area.

Environmental Court Judge Larry Potter, reversing a previous decision, upheld a 2013 transfer of Ashlar Hall from Robert “Prince Mongo” Hodges to an acquaintance who wants to turn the stately but decaying property into a home for military veterans.

17. Legacy Wealth Management Grows Staff, Relocates -

Legacy Wealth Management is starting 2014 with a handful of new faces and a move to a new office soon.

New additions to the ranks at Legacy include Brent Westbrook, who’s joined the firm as managing director of business development and client service. He came to Legacy from Argent Financial Group and will be working to introduce Legacy’s services to individuals, families and business-sponsored retirement plans.

18. Office Occupancy Ends 2013 on High Note -

An unusually strong fourth quarter helped push the overall Memphis office market occupancy rate into positive territory for 2013, according to year-end commercial real estate market reports.

The Memphis market recorded absorption of 225,338 square feet in the fourth quarter – the largest positive absorption the market has experienced during any quarter in more than 10 years – to end the year with positive net absorption of 40,558 square feet, according to CB Richard Ellis Memphis.

A Monday, Jan. 13, hearing before Environmental Court Judge Larry Potter did little to clear the air surrounding a November transfer of the 1397 Central Ave. property and competing claims over its future.

21. Banner Year for East Memphis Office Space -

The Memphis office real estate market began showing signs of life in 2013, with the market for Class A office space in the East Memphis submarket fueling the resurgence.

While the city’s overall office market numbers may not appear very strong, the city’s most desired office submarket – East Memphis around Poplar Avenue and Interstate 240 – began showing strong signs of improvement in the second half of the year.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has launched its 2014 Dream Home Giveaway contest.

St. Jude officials on Wednesday, Dec. 18, broke ground on the new home inside the Canterbury Manor development in Eads. Renaissance Development Co. is the developer of Canterbury Manor and Southern Serenity Homes is building the home, which will be given away June 22.

The owner of the 152-unit Countryside North Apartments at 6920 Reese Road in Northeast Memphis has filed a $5 million loan on the property.

26. Meadows Appointed to State Dentistry Board -

Dr. Dan T. Meadows has been appointed to the Tennessee Board of Dentistry by Gov. Bill Haslam. Meadows, who has a private practice on Walnut Grove Road, will serve as the Rotating Dentist member through June 2016.

27. Leases Push Renaissance Center Near Capacity -

The Renaissance Center office building in East Memphis should be near capacity early next year, following a series of recent lease signings.

Financial Federal signed a lease on Tuesday, Nov. 20, to occupy 27,000 square feet on the first and second floors of the Renaissance Center, 1715 Aaron Brenner Drive. In addition to the new location, the growing financial firm will have signage atop the East Memphis office building along Poplar Avenue east of Interstate 240.

By this time next year, Midtown residents could be shopping at a new Fresh Market grocery store.

The upscale grocery chain is eyeing the Union Avenue Ike's, which a Walgreen Co. representative confirmed will be shuttered.

To cap off Healthy Heart Month, the new 100,000-square-foot Kroc Center held its open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony last weekend.

The state-of-the-art Salvation Army Ray and Joan Kroc Corps Community Center has welcomed more than 10,000 visitors in its first few days.

55. Filling the Voids -

Last year was a banner year for adaptive reuse projects in Midtown and Downtown.

Developers announced plans for the Sears Crosstown building, Overton Square, Hotel Chisca, James Lee House and old United Warehouse in the South Main Historic Arts District. Construction began on The Pyramid, turning it into a 220,000-square-foot mega-Bass Pro Shop Outdoor World, and Memphis in May moved into its new headquarters at 56 S. Front St., a 14,600-square-foot building that’s on the National Register of Historic Places.

56. Loeb: City Should Increase Investment in Urban Core -

The relevance of Overton Square is that it’s one of many initiatives the city has in place to make Memphis a better place and a city of choice for the millennial generation.

Seventy-seven percent of those born from the early 1980s to the early 2000s want to live in the urban core and to drive less.

71. Midtown Utopia -

Of Memphis’ tales of humble beginnings, of which there are many, the fluctuating renaissance of the Cooper-Young neighborhood is certainly compelling throughout.

The area has cycled from its 19th century roots to 1970s crime and neglect to its present-day status as one of the largest historic districts in the Southeast, a magnet of all ages and walks of life. All thanks to individuals and organizations that wouldn’t settle for sub-par quality in their tiny town within the bustling Bluff City.

Parkway announced the disposition of Falls Building, Forum I, II & III, and Toyota Center in the same Thursday, Jan. 5, statement that announced the date of its fourth quarter 2011 earnings release and conference call.
