1. Achievement School District Prepares for Third Year -

It was already official before Achievement School District superintendent Chris Barbic made the formal announcement last week.

Months ago, Barbic had confirmed that former Westside Middle School principal Bobby White would be leading the state-run school district’s effort at Frayser High School in the 2014-2015 school year.

2. District Lines on Tap for Commission -

Five days is a long time in politics. That’s the gap between the Monday, Dec. 19, meeting of the Shelby County Commission and the special meeting of the commission last Wednesday.

At the special meeting, commissioners again floated a new redistricting plan that would keep the 13-member body at five districts covering all of Shelby County.

MEMPHIS (AP) – Actor Danny Glover and two other recipients of this year's Freedom Awards spoke Thursday about the importance of education and the role young people played in the civil rights movement.

January is National Mentoring Month, and the Memphis Grizzlies TEAM UP Youth Mentoring Initiative is preparing to launch its new TEAM Mentoring program.

Instead of traditional one-on-one mentoring, the new program, inspired by other successful models across the country, will feature a 1-to-3 adult-to-student ratio.

5. U of M’s Heath Given Distinguished Teaching Award -

Dr. Julia Heath, professor of economics at the University of Memphis, has been honored with the Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award by the Southern Economic Association.

6. Committee to ConsiderContract With Salton Cos. -      In a committee meeting today, the Shelby County Board of Commissioners will consider a $1.3 million contract with Salton Cos. LLC for an expansion project on the Shelby County Sheriff's Office Training Academy.
