4. Record iPhone Sales Drive Blowout Quarter for Apple -

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) – Apple had another blowout quarter thanks to its new plus-sized iPhones, which helped the company smash sales records for the holiday season.

Apple said Tuesday that it sold 74.5 million iPhones during the three months that ended Dec. 31, beating analysts' expectations for the latest models of Apple's most popular gadget, introduced in September.

Last Friday, President Obama announced a $250 million manufacturing hub will be anchored at The University of Tennessee-Knoxville, focusing on advanced materials, like polymer composites, which combine fiber with plastics to create products that are stronger and lighter than steel.

24. Rudd Defends Relay Partnership For Teachers -

The University of Memphis’ College of Education produced 19 teachers last year who are teaching in the 59 lowest performing schools in the Shelby County Schools system.

University of Memphis president David Rudd wants the number to be around 600 a year and he wants the school’s College of Education to partner with the nonprofit Relay Graduate School of Education to meet that goal.

29. UT Medical School Looking at Expansion -

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – The University of Tennessee Health Science Center says it is looking at expanding its program in Nashville.

The Tennessean reports UTHSC Chancellor Steve J. Schwab said in a statement that the institution, which is based in Memphis, is eyeing "a major construction project" that would bring allow it to attract more medical students to Middle Tennessee.

The long-vacant Tennessee Brewery Downtown could be reborn as a largely residential project, according to new details about the pending redevelopment.

The development team behind the brewery project at 495 Tennessee St. is considering renovating the current building into residential units, the ground-up construction of a new residential building adjacent to the existing structure and a new parking garage with ground floor commercial space to be built directly across the street.

Cobalt Industrial REIT II, an affiliate of Cobalt Capital Partners, has sold the properties at 4366, 4406 and 4436 Malone Road to Colfin Cobalt I-II Owner LLC, an affiliate of Santa Monica, Calif.-based Colony Financial Inc., according to a Dec. 18 special warranty deed.

39. Southwind Apartments Sell for $28 Million -

A team that includes Memphis-based Fogelman Venture Partners has sold The Preserve at Southwind apartment community for $28 million.

G&I VII Preserve at Southwind LLC, a joint venture between Rick and Mark Fogelman and New York-based DRA Advisors LLC, sold the 306-unit complex to Colorado-based Preserve at Southwind Apartments LP, an affiliate of Continental Realty Advisors Ltd., according to a Dec. 22 warranty deed. The sellers acquired the property for $22.1 million in 2011.

40. Graceland Jets on Auction Block -

Two jets once owned by Elvis Presley that have been part of tours of Graceland since the mid-1980s are going on the auction block, the auction company authorized by Graceland announced Friday, Jan. 2.

42. REIT Buys Distribution Center for $14.5 Million -

A large distribution center in Southeast Memphis has traded hands for $14.5 million, and it’s another out-of-state real estate investment trust doing the buying.

Crown Memphis Associates LLC sold the distribution center at 4836 Hickory Hill Road to SIR Properties Trust, an affiliate of Massachusetts-based Select Income REIT, according to a Dec. 23 warranty deed. Select Income REIT primarily owns properties that are net leased to single tenants. Around 35 percent of SIR’s rents are from land the company owns in Hawaii that is under long term lease to clients with the remaining revenues coming from single-tenant office and industrial properties across the U.S.

43. Bioworks Helped Spur Memphis Economy in 2014 -

In a variety of ways, the biosciences industry in Memphis helped lead the way in 2014 in terms of job creation and laying a foundation for economic growth in the future.

About that groundwork for growth to come, for example, the Memphis Bioworks Foundation got tapped early in 2014 to lead a new entrepreneurship venture in the city called The EPIcenter, with the goal of creating 1,000 entrepreneurs and 50 companies in the city over the next decade.

Evaporcool’s product makes air-conditioning and refrigeration systems more energy-efficient and helps reduce the clients’ carbon footprint, saving the client money and lowering maintenance costs. Evaporcool’s management determined that the company was at the right stage for a strategic partner, and after a national search, Evaporcool decided to work locally with Kemmons Wilson Cos.

54. Raleigh Apartments Sell for $2.5 Million -

The Creekwood Village Apartments in Raleigh have been sold for $2.5 million.

55. Folk’s Folly Rebrands, Renames Butcher Shop -

Folk’s Folly has finished rebranding and renovating the restaurant’s adjacent butcher shop that opened in 1989, a spate of activity that also included renaming the shop in honor of restaurant founder Humphrey Folk.

56. Evaporcool Partners with Kemmons Wilson Cos. -

Evaporcool Solutions, a Memphis-based manufacturer of commercial aftermarket HVAC efficiency systems, has announced a new partnership with Kemmons Wilson Cos.

When Bob Dylan drops by, he generally goes right for “a handful” of Hank and Carter Family recordings, although on one Lower Broadway afternoon the old man from the North Country also is reported to have purchased a “Larry the Cable Guy” DVD.

58. T Clifton Gallery Supports Carpenter Art Garden -

T Clifton Art Gallery is donating 15 percent of all sales through Dec. 20 to the Carpenter Art Garden in Binghampton.

This is the gallery’s third year to champion “shop with a cause” during the holiday season and the second straight year of supporting the efforts of Carpenter Art Garden. In addition to donating a portion of sales, the gallery will accept donations on behalf of the organization.

Shelby County recorded 90 commercial sales in October, down 4 percent from 94 commercial sales recorded in October 2013, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

If Greater Memphis Chamber officials get their wish, Memphis will be the nation’s cleanest city by 2019.

The chamber will spearhead a four-year effort to help clean up the litter and waste found in so many corners of the Bluff City, an ambitious new “moon mission” for the economic and community development organization.

Popwell joined Sharp & Robbins’ Memphis office in 2008 as an estimator/project manager and most recently served as general operations manager of the Nashville office since 2012.

67. How Businesses Can Avoid Holiday Party Problems -

NEW YORK (AP) – If John Olajide's staffers have one too many at his company's holiday party he'll have them shuttled home in a taxi or send them to a hotel room for the night.

"If they're at our party, we're responsible for them," says Olajide, the founder and CEO of Dallas software maker Axxess. "We'll take any steps to ensure their safety."

68. RadioShack Clashes Again With Lenders -

FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) – Trading in shares of RadioShack was halted Tuesday after the company disclosed a dispute with one of its lenders.

Salus Capital Partners is claiming that the struggling electronics retailer had breached covenants on a $250 million term loan, the company said.

A new single-family residential project in the heart of Victorian Village is doing very well, thank you very much.

Five of the eights lots inside Planters Row II, a unique master planned community on Jefferson Avenue in Victorian Village between the Medical Center and Downtown core, are already optioned or under contract after the first day of sales, according to Scott Blake, president of Design 500 Inc.

70. No Child Left Behind Gets Renewed Focus -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The No Child Left Behind education law could be making a political comeback.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, the Tennessee Republican who is the incoming chairman of the Senate committee overseeing education, says his top education priority is fixing the landmark Bush-era law. His goal? Get a bill signed by President Barack Obama early next year.

Indianapolis-based developer Milhaus Ventures has acquired several vacant parcels for the long-awaited Highland Row project near the University of Memphis for $4.3 million.

Milhaus, operating as Highland Row LLC, acquired the properties at 443 S. Highland St. and 366, 374 and 380 Ellsworth St. from Worthington Hyde Partners, operating as Highland Row Land Partners LLC, according to a Nov. 26 warranty deed.

100. Courtyard Memphis East Sells for $11.7 Million -

Another East Memphis hotel has been sold, this one fetching $11.7 million.

The sale was part of a larger $1.1 billion deal New York City-based NorthStar Realty Finance Corp. announced in September to acquire 52 hotels across the country.
