WASHINGTON (AP) – The higher price of organic foods and other products doesn't seem to be deterring consumers: Sales jumped 11 percent last year, an industry report says.

Sales of organics have been rapidly growing since the United States put strict rules in place and began certifying organic products in 2002. According to the Agriculture Department, the number of U.S. organic operations has more than tripled since then; the number grew 5 percent just last year.

Gopal Govan is seeking a special use permit from the city-county Land Use Control Board to build the four-story, 104-room LaQuinta Inn & Suites hotel on the site of the former New York Suit Exchange at 310 Union Ave., located at Union and Danny Thomas Boulevard. The Land Use Control Board meets Thursday, Feb. 12.

The board of the city-county Economic Development Growth Engine on Wednesday, Jan. 21, approved the controversial payment-in-lieu-of-taxes incentive on an 8-1 vote. Larry Jackson voted against the measure.

Shelby County homebuilders filed 43 permits last month, down 29.5 percent from 61 permits in November 2013, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com. The 43 permits filed in November is down 31.7 percent from the 63 permits filed in October.

43. Retailers Setting Eyes on Memphis -

The Memphis-area retail sector, fueled by several new retailers entering the market and a massive amount of grocery-based activity, experienced a strong 2014.

Grocery store activity came into full bloom this year, with market leader Kroger investing heavily in its stores and higher-end, organic-focused chains targeting the market for growth.

Memphis is poised to land hundreds of new jobs and retain several hundred more. Target will seek incentives from Memphis and Shelby County as early as next week for an online fulfillment center that will create over 400 new jobs.

The 63 permits filed in October is down 18 percent from the 77 permits builders filed in Shelby County in September.

94. Tile Shop Inks Lease for First Area Store -

A specialty retailer of high-quality tile will open its first location in Memphis later this year.

The Tile Shop is in the final stages of negotiating a roughly 20,000-square-foot lease at 1245 Germantown Parkway, between Cordova Road and Autumn Creek Drive, in the Germantown Square Shopping Center in Cordova, according to company representative Lindsey Rose.
