1. GE Targets Late July for Credit Card IPO -

NEW YORK (AP) – General Electric is targeting late July for the initial public offering of its credit card business, named Synchrony Financial.

The announcement Friday, which was included in the company's second-quarter earnings report, is the first step in GE's exit from that line of business.

2. Asics America to Expand Byhalia Footprint -

Asics is expanding its central footwear and apparel distribution center inside the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park area by 342,144 square feet.

The expansion comes on the heels of a 513,000-square-foot build-to-suit completed in 2010, and now will consolidate the footwear distribution center with the apparel distribution center, which was previously located in Southaven. Asics hopes to improve its overall efficiency by combining the two components under one roof, which will total 855,144 square feet.

3. Green Mountain Consulting Finds Home Along Poplar -

Logistics vendor Green Mountain Consulting wasn’t necessarily looking to buy an office building when it began its search for more office space for expansion.

“We’re not getting into the commercial real estate business because we wanted to be in it; we got into it because we have a company to operate and needed the space,” said Jim Jacobs, one of Green Mountain’s co-founders.

5. City Council Turns Again to Benefits Discussions -

Memphis City Council members won’t take any major votes Tuesday, July 15, on city employee benefits.

But the controversial topic will likely dominate much of another council day at City Hall. The council is in the gap between its approval of health insurance changes in June and an October vote on the companion proposal to change city employee pension plans for new hires and those with less than 10 years of service.

8. Malone Center Owner Files $4.1 Million Loan -

The owner of the 23.7-acre Malone Distribution Center near the intersection of East Raines Road and Lamar Avenue in Oakhaven has filed a $4.1 million loan on the industrial property.

Cobalt Industrial REIT II filed the deed of trust with absolute assignment of leases and rents, security agreement and fixture filing July 1 through Wells Fargo Bank NA. The deed encompasses parcels at 4366 Malone Road, 4406 Malone and 4436 Malone.

9. ‘Significant Headwinds’ -

When Gov. Bill Haslam joined local economic development and civic officials at FedExForum in January to announce that Conduit Global would open a call center in Shelby County that would employ 1,000 people over the next three to five years, it provided a much-needed boost to the local office real estate sector.

14. Hollingsworth Buys Mississippi Industrial Property -

The Hollingsworth Cos., which operates a prominent industrial development company with holdings across the South, has acquired an industrial building in Senatobia, Miss.

Clinton, Tenn.-based Hollingsworth recently acquired the 198,450-square-foot building at 795 Shands Bottom Road in Senatobia from BMW.

15. Economy Shrank at Steep 2.9 Percent Rate in First Quarter -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The U.S. economy shrank at a steep annual rate of 2.9 percent in the January-March quarter as a harsh winter contributed to the biggest contraction since the depths of the recession five years ago. But the setback is widely thought to be temporary, with growth rebounding solidly since spring.

The owner of the 26,568-square-foot warehouse at 3025 Kate Bond Blvd. in Bartlett has filed a $2.2 million construction loan on the property.

24. Brim’s Owner Files Loan on Bartlett Facility -

A company whose principal owns Brim’s Snack Foods has filed a $4.3 million construction loan on its 7940 A E Beaty Drive property in Bartlett.

TBLN Investments – whose principal, Terry Brimhall, is founder and president of Brim’s parent company Brimhall Foods Co. Inc. – filed the loan April 30 through Renasant Bank. Though the loan was filed in April, the Shelby County Register of Deeds didn’t record the loan until this week.

25. What Could Possibly Go Wrong? -

The most commonly cited indicator of complacency, the VIX or volatility index, recently hit a low of 10.73, a level not seen since early 2007.

Now a low VIX does not in any way signal an imminent crisis, but it does indicate a very complacent consensus susceptible to even slightly unpleasant surprises. Sadly, when the markets cannot find a reason to sell, Murphy ’s Law always provides one.

29. Perfection vs. Petri Dish -

We live in the fastest-evolving marketplace in history, so why is it that so many companies still move so slowly bringing new products to market?

We believe it is because they are holding fast to an industrial revolution mindset where innovations are carefully devised, honed and perfected. The heft of extensive machines and expensive infrastructure mire down the collective mindset, locking in a collective fear of imperfection. There is much to learn from the nimble tech industry that focuses on speed to market over perfection.

30. Pay Raises Go Mainly to Those in Select Industries -

NEW YORK (AP) – If you hope to get a raise that finally feels like one, it helps to work in the right industry.

Historically, at this stage in the economy's recovery, pay would be rising in most sectors. But five years after the Great Recession officially ended, raises remain sharply uneven across industries and, as a whole, have barely kept up with prices. Overall pay has been rising about 2 percent a year, roughly equal to inflation.

A 10-acre heavy industrial site at 9373 Macon Road in Cordova has sold for $1.5 million to William A. McMahan of Bartlett.

32. Renovation, Expansion Underway at Saddle Creek -

The Shops at Saddle Creek has picked up a new tenant as the lifestyle center undergoes a renovation.

Marmi Shoes has leased 1,395 square feet between Vera Bradley and Madewell at Saddle Creek. St. Louis-based Marmi Shoes offers a wide variety of women’s shoe styles and sizes with a European influence. The Saddle Creek location, the first in the Memphis area and the second in Tennessee, is expected to open in the fall.

33. Many Seek New Homes Near Cities But are Priced Out -

WASHINGTON (AP) – City living has been a blessing for Tim Nelson.

The Phoenix lawyer moved downtown a few months ago into a new $389,000 home with a warehouse-style floor plan, a Jacuzzi tub and kitchen counters made of Caesarstone quartz. His favorite coffee spot is three blocks away. When the Arizona Diamondbacks play on Friday nights, he can watch postgame fireworks from his deck.

35. Oil Company Approved for Former International Paper Site -

A portion of the former International Paper property in Natchez, Miss., is now under option to a company involved in the extraction of oil from the Tuscaloosa Marine Shale.

Natchez Inc. Executive Director Chandler Russ told The Natchez Democrat the transaction comes with the promise of 20 jobs. Russ said local officials are under a confidentiality agreement.

54. Warehouse Owner Files $1.1 Million Loan on Property -

The owner of the 117,300-square-foot warehouse at 4242 B.F. Goodrich Blvd. in Oakhaven has filed a $1.1 million loan on the property.

Riveredge Co. Inc., which lists a Bartlett address, filed the deed of trust April 16 through Peoples Bank of Clifton, Tenn.

55. Bourland Heflin to Expand, Renovate Poplar Home -

A Memphis law firm is expanding its East Memphis office and improving public areas for clients and visitors.

Bourland Heflin Alvarez Minor & Matthews PLC renewed and expanded its lease in the 5400 Poplar Ave. office building.

56. Volvo Group’s Byhalia Facility to Employ 250 -

The Volvo Group will build a massive new distribution center in Byhalia, Miss., that should employ around 250 people.

The 1 million-square-foot distribution center will support the company’s Mack, Volvo and UD truck brands, as well as Volvo Construction Equipment and Volvo Penta. 

57. Lessons for Memphis Abound in Atlanta’s Beltline -

The Atlanta Beltline is an infrastructure framework around the urban core of Atlanta – a 22-mile loop of mostly abandoned railroads that is being transformed into a transit greenway.

It is a linear park with streetcars, bicycle paths and pedestrian trails that will connect more than 40 diverse neighborhoods, as well as city schools, historic sites and cultural locales.

WASHINGTON (AP) – The American economy shrugged off the end of a brutal winter last month, rebounding with the biggest hiring surge in two years and suggesting that the job market's gains could endure.

63. Area Industrial Market Poised for Solid Year -

All signs are pointing toward a strong year for the Memphis-area industrial market.

The Memphis market closed the first quarter with 897,829 square feet of absorption and the total vacancy rate for the Memphis market – 10.8 percent - is the lowest the market has experienced in 14 years, according to CB Richard Ellis Memphis.

64. Eastgate Set for Possible Makeover -

A venerable shopping center in East Memphis could be getting a significant makeover, according to a recent retail market report from CB Richard Ellis Memphis.

Eastgate Center LLC, the owner of Eastgate Shopping Center at Park Avenue and White Station Road in East Memphis, could make significant aesthetic improvements to the retail center beginning this year.

NEW YORK (AP) – Wal-Mart is delving deeper into financial services at its stores and shaking up the money transfer business.

The world's largest retailer introduced a new money transfer service Thursday that it says will cut fees for its low-income customers by up to 50 percent compared with similar services elsewhere. The Walmart-2-Walmart service is being rolled out in partnership with Ria Money Transfer, a subsidiary of Euronet Worldwide Inc.

2013: A group of 61 Ku Klux Klan members along with neo-Nazis and Aryan Nations members rallied at the Shelby County Courthouse to protest the plan by the City Council to rename three Confederate-themed parks. The massive police response included 400 law enforcement officers in riot gear, a chain link fence around the Klan protestors and another chain link fence two blocks away around a group of 1,200 counter protestors and curious onlookers. One counter protestor was arrested.
