54. Foreclosures Up 30 Pct. in Q1 -

The timing and backdrop seem fitting. During the first quarter of 2012, the same three-month period in which the state of Tennessee announced its participation in a $25 billion settlement with some of the biggest lenders over foreclosure abuses, the number of foreclosures in Shelby County swelled by almost 30 percent.

55. Awards Just One Facet Of Comm. Council -

This year marks a decade of existence for the Memphis Area Association of Realtors’ Commercial Council, the trade organization for the commercial real estate profession and its related sectors.

The council has about 325 members whose professions include commercial developers, brokers, property managers and other related CRE careers. Two of the council’s main events each year are the Commercial Property Forecast Summit, held in February, and the Pinnacle Awards, which honor the highest-producing commercial brokers each spring.

Memphis last month was named as one of 29 metropolitan areas to be included on the National Association of Home Builders/First American Improving Markets Index, which is now nearing 100 cities.

The index identifies metro areas that have shown improvement from their respective troughs in housing permits, employment and house prices for at least six consecutive months. Other notable new entrants to the list in February were Miami; Boston; Detroit; Kansas City, Mo.; Portland, Ore.; and Salt Lake City.

EnSafe will also perform Clean-Up Planning for possible hazardous substance and petroleum within the 25-mile-long and two-mile-wide corridor along the Wolf River as well as the west side of Downtown south of Crump Boulevard.

Three companies related to the Grant family of homebuilders have bought the remaining 105 lots in Arlington’s Kensington Planned Development for a combined $2.6 million from BancorpSouth Bank. Kensington was approved for 109 lots on 45.4 acres.

Multifamily investment activity in Memphis continues to gain steam as lenders slowly loosen their purse strings.

Planners of an upcoming conference are hoping to put Memphis on the map even more so than it already is.

The Conference On Sustainable Real Estate is slated for March 24 to 26 at the University of Memphis. The conference – modeled after a similar program offered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – brings to Memphis internationally recognized leaders on sustainable real estate, land economics, land planning and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, or LEED, construction procedures.

Lawyers for the city of Baltimore are preparing to reload in their two-year court fight against Wells Fargo over its lending practices in the city.

Baltimore is planning to file a new complaint against the lender after a federal judge last week dismissed the city’s second amended complaint. The city was given until Oct. 22 to try again in its effort to prove Wells broadly discriminated against black borrowers in its mortgage lending.

94. Building Permit Filed For Grand Island Apartments -

The group bringing the 204-unit Grand Island apartments to Mud Island has filed a $12.1 million building permit with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement. Grand Island Partners, an affiliate of Grant & Co., filed the permit with plans to break ground in the spring, said company president Keith Grant.

Dr. Linda Finch has been appointed associate dean and director of undergraduate programs for the Loewenberg School of Nursing at the University of Memphis. Finch was previously an associate professor on the nursing faculty. She has been named an American Nurses Foundation Scholar by the American Nurses Association and is an active member of Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society for nursing. She also has served on the editorial board of “The Tennessee Nurse.”

100. County Signs Paperwork to Acquire CSX Line -

Shelby County Mayor A C Wharton Jr. was all smiles Wednesday afternoon as he signed the paperwork transferring the old CSX railroad line from the railroad to the county.

The county will now transform the corridor into a 7-mile multiuse trail that extends from the Poplar-Union avenues viaduct in the west to Farm and Mullins Station roads and Shelby Farms Park to the east.
