DETROIT (AP) – Price cuts at Nissan and strong demand for pickup trucks helped U.S. auto sales rebound in May after a slight dip in April.

General Motors reported its strongest monthly sales since September of 2008. Chrysler, Ford, and Toyota also reported increases. Nissan Motor Co. notched its highest May sales ever after cutting prices on seven popular models early in the month. Only Volkswagen said sales fell compared with May of last year.

But he said that the U.S. economy is still improving modestly and business will improve regardless of who wins the presidential election.

21. General Motors' Stock Rise Surprises Industry -

DETROIT (AP) – Surprise! The top-performing stock among automakers in the U.S. this quarter is General Motors.

The company, which endured management upheaval during the quarter and announced that it would lose substantial cash in Europe, saw its shares rise almost 18 percent from July through late September. The gain was the best since the first quarter of this year, when the stock climbed about 23 percent. GM posted strong profits in that period.

25. New Mileage Standards Would Double Fuel Efficiency -

WASHINGTON (AP) – The average gas mileage of new cars and trucks will have to nearly double by 2025 under regulations that were finalized Tuesday by the Obama administration.

The new rules will require the fleet of new cars and trucks to average 54.5 miles per gallon in 13 years, up from 28.6 mpg at the end of last year.

DETROIT (AP) – U.S. auto sales are off to a strong start this year, continuing their brisk pace from late 2011.

Chrysler had its best January in four years while Toyota got a boost from its new Camry. Volkswagen, which wants to aggressively expand in the U.S., reported much higher sales. One sour note was GM, where sales fell compared to a strong January a year earlier.

NEW YORK (AP) – General Motors will buy Chevrolet Volts back from any owner who is afraid the electric cars will catch fire, the company's CEO said Thursday.

In an exclusive interview with The Associated Press, CEO Dan Akerson insisted that the cars are safe, but said the company will purchase the Volts because it wants to keep customers happy. Three fires have broken out in Volts after side-impact crash tests done by the federal government.

49. GM to Offer Free Loaner Cars to Volt Owners -

DETROIT (AP) – General Motors is offering free loaner cars to Chevrolet Volt owners worried about the vehicles catching fire.

The move comes after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced Friday that the government is investigating fires involving the Volt's lithium-ion batteries.

As the local commercial real estate market approaches the end of 2011, experts say it appears to be in line with national fundamentals for secondary and tertiary markets.

Shelby County commercial sales in the third quarter were the highest sales volume since Q3 2007, with $259 million, according to real estate information company Chandler Reports, www.chandlerreports.com.

A North Hickory Hill apartment complex has traded hands for the second time in 18 months.

Bloomington, Minn.-based New Life Core Willow Lake LLC has bought Willow Lake Apartments at 2774 Mendenhall Road from NW-Willow Lake LLC for $7.8 million. The purchase was financed with a $7 million loan through KeyBank NA.

Eight Memphis area organizations have been recognized by the American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Companies Program for promoting physical activity and health in the workplace.

New organizations with Gold status include the city of Germantown, General Electric Advanced Services Inc., the city of Memphis, Pinnacle Airlines Corp., University of Tennessee Health Science Center and the Church Health Center. Ring Container Technologies has renewed for another year at Gold status and Baptist Memorial Hospital-Memphis has joined as a new Platinum level member.

53. Arlington Pet Hospital Files $1.2M Permit For Expansion -

Construction plans for a new stand-alone space for a growing Arlington veterinary clinic are under way near its current shopping center space.

Samuel Garrett Davis, founder of Arlington Pet Hospital PLLC, has filed a $1.2 million building permit application with the city-county Department of Construction Code Enforcement for a 5,200-square-foot facility, complete with hospital boarding and grooming capabilities.

54. West Tenn. Solar Farm By I-40 Nears Completion -

This was supposed to be the month that the West Tennessee Solar Farm in Haywood County was completed.

But while the farm’s growing set of solar panels by Interstate 40 has been getting the attention of passing motorists in recent weeks, the panels have been the easiest part of the undertaking being spearheaded by the University of Tennessee Research Foundation.

PITTSBURGH (AP) – President Barack Obama is pressing for passage of his full $447 billion jobs package in the face of certain congressional defeat while embracing more modest administrative remedies to the nation's sluggish economy and unwaveringly high unemployment.

VIENNA, Va. (AP) – The wave of lawsuits and other demands from investors in mortgage-backed securities contributed to a big spike in reports of likely mortgage fraud during the second quarter, according to a Treasury Department report.

Bryan Jordan, the president and CEO of First Tennessee Bank’s parent company, told his audience at an industry conference a few days ago in New York City that his company has been out of the mortgage business for three years now.

Compared to the overall U.S. construction landscape, Memphis’ position appears to be managing fairly well.

This fall, a group of 1,000 Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division customers move deeper into a three-year, futuristic-sounding “Smart Grid” test project that began this past January.

They volunteered last year to get new automated meters for their homes, and half of them got a wireless digital counter top readout for inside their homes that allows them to watch their electricity usage. With a computer dashboard readout they can also follow trends for energy usage over time, and the device even suggests scenarios for cutting costs.
