5. Schools Funding Compromise Avoids Legal Complications -

Don’t expect to see construction work begin immediately at a school near you. But the Shelby County Commission’s approval Monday, May 12, of $52.1 million in capital funding for all seven of the public school systems in the county breaks the two-year intermission on schools construction funding that began with the 2011 move to a schools merger in Shelby County.

6. Airport Authority to Raze Vacant Hotel -

The Memphis and Shelby County Airport Authority has awarded a contract to raze a vacant hotel.

The Airport Authority chose DeNovo Constructors of Chicago to raze the vacant Regency Inn & Suites adjacent to Memphis International Airport’s cell phone lot. DeNovo’s $791,350 offer was slightly lower than Chris Woods Construction Co.’s bid of $842,000.

7. Atlantic Track Grows Local Operations -

Bloomfield, N.J.-based Atlantic Track & Turnout Co. is expanding its Memphis operations with a 12,900-square-foot pre-engineered metal building addition with a bridge crane at 363 E. Bodley Ave.

8. Fairway Manor to Rise in Westwood -

An $8.5 million public housing project called Fairway Manor soon will break ground in Westwood’s 38109 ZIP code.

The facility at 12 W. Fairway Ave. will include a three-story senior living space and a seven-building townhouse apartment complex with clubhouse. The 110,000-square-foot project will contain 96 units between the two properties.

9. Children’s Heart Foundation Given $15,000 for Relocation -

The International Children’s Heart Foundation was awarded a $15,000 commercial office grant Wednesday, Nov. 14, by the Center City Development Corp. to move its offices from 1750 Madison Ave., suite 500, to Downtown’s Brinkley Plaza, 80 Monroe Ave., suite G-1.

Cargill Corn Milling North America, which operates a wet mill on Presidents Island in Memphis, is planning work on a “flexi-container storage building” there, according to a $1.4 million building permit application filed with the city-county Office of Construction Code Enforcement.

Compared to the overall U.S. construction landscape, Memphis’ position appears to be managing fairly well.

Within the last 10 months, the city has landed several heavy manufacturing projects – Electrolux, Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc. and Kruger Inc., to name a few – in a time when, nationally, the manufacturing sector is stagnant.

During a national online news conference last month, Associated Builders & Contractors chief economist Anirban Basu said although employment in the construction industry has expanded over the past four months, the nation’s construction industry recovery may be two years away.

20. Ground Breaking Set For Southaven Restaurant -

Southaven Mayor Greg Davis along with Fillin Station Grille owners Steve Beene, Preston Lamm and Jim LoSapio will celebrate the opening phase of construction for the restaurant at 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
